Radio Telefís Éireann (RTÉ) (English : Radio and Television of Ireland) is the national state broadcaster in the Republic of Ireland.
Ireland 's radio service began on January 1 1926, while regular television broadcasts began on 31 December 1961.
Raidió na Gaeltachta (the Irish language station targeted at the gaeltachtaí, the Irish language speaking areas of Ireland) The first voice broadcast of 2RN (the original radio callsign for Radio 1) took place on November 14, 1925 when an announcer said, "Seo Raidió 2RN, Baile Átha Cliath ag tástáil" ("This is Radio 2RN, Dublin testing").

The original Independent National Radio franchise holder in Ireland was 100-102 Century Radio, which launched in 1989 and closed down abrubtly within months.
The Independent Radio and Television Commission did not re-advertise the contract for several years, until 1996.
Radio Ireland Limited, originally owned by John McColgan and Moya Doherty (and because of their involvement, dubbed "Radio Riverdance"), won the contract when it was advertised.

Radio Holger, based in Copenhagen in Denmark, are in danger of having their licence to broadcast taken from them following remarks made on the air by the station's owner.
Radio 1 has maintained its steady growth with a reach of 10.24 million, the highest for two years, up on the quarter (9.96m) and up half a million on the year (9.72m).

Community Radio Youghal (C.R.Y.) in Co. Cork has moved to its new frequency of 107.2MHz as required by the ODTR due to "re-planning of the FM band".
In a policy document released today, the Broadcasting Commission of Ireland (BCI) has said that it would now consider allowing 100% ownership of radio stations, but only where all the other criteria set out in its policy were met.
Previously, no single company or individual was allowed own over 46% of a local radio station and no existing radio operator could own more than 27% of a station.

Radio Ireland, which begin broadcasting on March 17th, have stated that their core target audience will be 25-44 adults.
When the Radio Ireland target audiences 25 - 44 yrs is isolated and split into its two component groups 25 - 34 and 35 - 44 it becomes evident that these are two specific and quite different audiences.
Given that Radio Ireland's programme schedule is geared towards young to middle-aged, this older Local station profile must make their younger listeners vulnerable.

It was little wonder that four of the five consortiums bidding for the national radio licence pitched their programming at the 25 to 45 year old radio listener.
Radio 1 attracts 57 per cent of the 55 to 64 age group and 60 per cent of the over 65s.
Forty five per cent of those aged between 25 and 34 are listening to local radio, while 38 per cent of the same age group is listening to RTE's music station, 2FM.

Did a little bit of research on the pirate radio shutdown today, calling Comreg, the Gardai etc. Here's what I found out: 11 locations were raided by Comreg and the Gardai on Tuesday and Wednesday (20th and 21st May) across Dublin.
Advance notice had been given to the radio stations that they were operating illegally, some in writing and some by phone.
Radio should be a free space, or at least there should be an egalitarian approach to the issuing of licences that's not based on the fatness of the envelope or the degree to which your prepared to promote the shite of the mainstream.

Ill-fated Radio Ireland will get a new name when it is relaunched.
That would indicate `Radio 100,' `FM 100' or some variant are among the possible choices in a shortlist of six.
It was reported at the weekend that at least one of the groups which lost out in their initial bids for the national radio licence will consider legal action if the new schedule is markedly different from the original concept under which Radio Ireland secured its contract.

On the 12th of July, a hoax raid occurred, to our knowledge, this was the real thing, so the transmitter was thrown out the window four floors down but amazingly, the transmitter survived the fall and we were back on air within a few hours when we had calmed down.

In a previous analysis - See Radio Ireland (March 1997), doubts were expressed as to the size of the gap in the market Radio Ireland were aiming for (25-44 Adults) or in fact, if there was a gap there at all.
It was also pointed out that the fact that RTE Radio 1 had revised its programming to try to consolidate, if not increase its vulnerable younger audience, would narrow the gap even further, if successful.
This is a time when radio audiences traditionally tail-off, with some only delivering small fractions of the listenership figures achieved during daytime.

Whereas Sunshine had been presenting itself as a bright and lively "Community Radio Dublin" style format not unlike UK commercial stations of the period, Radio Nova was slick and fast, along the lines of Los Angeles Kiss-FM, and New Yorks WPLJ and totally unlike anything on air at the time in Europe.
Sunshine Radio soon added an FM transmitter on 101 Mhz to put a stereo signal into Dublin, and Nova added a powerful AM outlet on 819Khz to capture listeners on the UK mainland many of whom were starting to listen to these stations from over the Irish Sea.
Frustrated at what they considered to be unfair competition and the news that Carey had imported a 50kilowatt transmitter from the USA, the state broadcaster RTE (Radio Telefis Eireann) took matters into its own hands and started to jam the signals of both stations in March of 1984.
