Encyclopedia: Radio host   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
Radio broadcasts have been a popular entertainment since the 1910s though popularity has declined some since television became widespread.
In the late 1940s and early 1950s, television eroded the popularity of most of these type of radio shows, and by the late 1950s radio broadcasting took on much the form it has today - strongly focused on music, news and sports, though drama can still be heard, especially on the BBC.
There has been a recent resurgence of interest in what is now called old-time radio or the "Golden Age of Radio," with surviving shows being traded and collected in reel-to-reel, cassette, CD and MP3 format.

Porter was a freewheeling host given to riffing about her beloved dogs, domestic dramas and whatever else popped into her head.
Porter's memorable stunts on the air was to call a singing psychic in Texas to locate a rug-shampooing machine, for which a local grocery store was hounding her for $600 for failing to return it.
Porter volunteered for children's causes, loved to swap flower cuttings and bulbs from her garden, and was "never happier than when there was a clam tide," said Murdock, a fellow Oregon native.

 Savage Anti-Semitism
Though racism, sexism and immigrant bashing have long thrived on American radio, one had to go back to the days of Father Coughlin and Gerald L.K. Smith in the 1930s to find mainstream broadcasters railing against the Jewishness of their political enemies.
Brad Kava, a radio columnist for the San Jose Mercury News and himself a Jew, told Salon, "He’s Jewish, but he always acts like he’s Christian." Gilson reported that when Kava noted that Savage was Jewish, Savage reported him to the Anti-Defamation League.
The Savage Nation is heard on over 300 radio stations--many of them owned by Disney/ABC; his book of the same name spent time at the top of bestseller lists in early 2003; and, in March, MSNBC gave him his own national cable show--also called The Savage Nation.

A new report by the group released this week attempts to tie talk radio to a dubious "sharp jump" in (self-reported) "Islamophobic hate crimes" in the United States.
National radio personalities Paul Harvey and Dr. Laura have also come under fire for expressing opinions about Islam and calling on Muslims to dissociate themselves from terrorists.
CAIR attacks the "hate-filled rhetoric" of conservative talk show hosts, but as Middle East scholars Daniel Pipes, Robert Spencer and others have amply demonstrated, several of the group's past and present leaders have refused to criticize the hate-filled rhetoric -- and bloody acts of violence -- of terrorist organizations such as Hamas and Hezbollah.

The reason she was given: "Budget Cuts." Have progressive liberal radio hosts become a "victim" of the economy or of bias?
I think what happened is that when Rush became so successful, all the unimaginative suits decided that every talk show host had to be male and conservative.
Some of the liberals they have tried out, like Mario Cuomo or Alan Dershowitz, were such failures (and rightly so, neither one of them had the least talent to be on the radio) that it just made the bosses even more sure that a liberal could not get an audience.
