Radipole lake, an RSPB Nature Reserve and mouth of the River Wey is an important habitat for birds and fish.
The town centre is right next to Radipole Lake and Weymouth Beach, which appeals to the many thousands of tourists that flock here.
The town is acknowledged as being amongst the first ever tourist destinations, after King George III made Weymouth his summer holiday residence on fourteen occasions between 1789 and 1805, sparking a trend of sea bathing and health tourism.

Both areas have had odd records, an otter was seen on Radipole lake last year, one was on Brownsea two years ago but not now.
The exceptions to these are the River Piddle (48.32% of sites were positive) and the River Wey and Fleet which had one positive record last year for Radipole Lake.
Other possibilities (but quite hard to survey) would be the wetlands and lakes on Brownsea, Littlesea and reedbed areas (very difficult to survey).

The anglers are rallying opposition to the plan after the RSPB offered to take on management of fishing in Radipole Lake as it negotiates to renew its lease with the council to run a bird reserve there.
Anglers are prepared to take on management of angling at the lake by issuing and checking permits, clearing up litter, building fishing platforms and acting as unpaid bailiffs to monitor the lake in their own time.

Radipole and Lodmoor are already potential Special Protection Areas under EU legislation, principally for the Bittern and Aquatic Warbler interest, and this work, which will be carried out over the next four years, is intended to improve the habitat still further by creating open pools and rejuvenating the reedbed at the top of the reserve.
Radipole played host to the first Retail Conference of the year, which was held at a local hotel.

He welcomed suggestions by anglers that they become involved by becoming bailiffs to police the lake and to form a Radipole Lake angling club.
ANGLERS have won new talks on a proposed shake-up of fishing rules at Radipole Lake after they packed a meeting in Weymouth.
The agreement for talks came as the RSPB proposed that it take on management of fishing rights at the lake under the renewal of its 35- year lease with the council to manage the nature reserve there.

Posted - 22 July 2003 : 01:00:44 AM i havnt been to weymouth for a few years but you can fish radipole lake its only 5mins walk from the seafront.
My mate thinks you can fish Radipole Lake in the centre of Weymouth bu I'm not sure.
the other one is down one of the roads near the station that run parralel to the lake.
