It is situated in the Masovian Voivodship (since 1999), previously capital of Radom Voivodship (1975-1998), 100 km south of Poland's capital, Warsaw.
"Radom" is also the popular unofficial name for a semiautomatic 9mm Parabellum pistol of Polish design (the Model 35/ViS-35) designed by Piotr Wilniewczyc and Jan Skrzypinski (hence the designation "ViS") which had been in production from 1935-45 at the national arsenal located in the city.

The city of Radom, with a population of 230,000 was selected as the largest city where the coordination of such a project is still feasible, while Elk, with a population of 55,000 serves as a smaller test site.
Radom has thus served as a kind of experimental plot; experience gained there is intended for use in the implementation of the Elk project.

The Judenrat of Radom was made responsible for the administration of the Jews’ property for the German administrative office, for the collection of rent payments on Jewish apartments, the maintenance of structures which the Germans requisitioned, and so on.
In the winter of 1941/1942, the Judenrat of Radom was ordered to transmit exacting instructions to the heads of the Judenrats in the region to prepare maps of the ghettos and up-to-date lists of their residents, indicating their ages and professions.
In Radom, as well as in other places, forced labourers were recruited from among the poorest; those with means could free themselves from work in exchange for a levy, which served the Judenrat with which to pay wages to the forced labourers (2-10 zlotys for one day’s work).
