RECITAL REVIEW: Off Track? By Renato Rodolfo-Sioson (Radu Lupu, January 24, 2006)
This is probably due to his peculiar, idiosyncratic stance behind the keyboard: Lupu is the only pianist I've witnessed who actually leans away from the piano, such that he is forced to stretch his arms full length in order to reach the keys.
But the most troubling aspect of Lupu's style by far was his loose, even sloppy treatment of rhythmic and structural issues, coupled with a wayward use of rubato.
Lupu's careful adherence to every dynamic mark, diminuendo, and ritardando (and the score is positively peppered with them) only focused on the minute details within the piece — and thus further emphasized its lack of coherence.

Radu Lupu is firmly established as one of the most important musicians of his generation and is widely acknowledged as a leading interpreter of the works of Beethoven, Brahms, Mozart and Schubert.
Radu Lupu’s first major American appearances were in 1972 with the Cleveland Orchestra under Daniel Barenboim and with the Chicago Symphony led by Carlo Maria Giulini.
Lupu’s North American schedule includes appearances with the Boston Symphony, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Atlanta Symphony and Seattle Symphony, as well as performances with the Staatskapelle Berlin under the direction of Daniel Barenboim in Chicago and New York.

classical music - andante - a recital becomes a communion
Radu Lupu confirms his status as a true poet, if not a holy man, of the keyboard.
Lupu's keen sense of dynamic nuance demonstrated that a more standard dramatic contrast between loud and soft isn't the only way to explore Beethoven's expansive musical spaces -- and may even diminish some of their mystery.
Along the way, Lupu's profound trust in the composer's voice brought home the abiding paradox of the pianist's artistry: instead of submerging his individuality, Lupu's reverent attention ensures a personal stamp of maximum interest.

RECITAL REVIEW; Talent under a Bushel By Anatole Leikin (Radu Lupu, February 6, 2003)
Radu Lupu is universally praised for his understated lyricism and restrained expression.
With the detached air of a casual observer, he coldly dissected Schubert's Sonata in A major, D. All the textural layers were clearly delineated, and the hierarchy between the primary and the secondary strata was masterfully maintained at all times.
Only once Lupu snapped out of his trance in the Schubert, when plaintive recitative phrases in the middle of the slow movement were interrupted by furious chords.

 Classical Voice of North Carolina
Lupu had his own singular concept of the work and he presented it with conviction, first performing the melody without expression, almost as a simple peasant's song.
Lupu extended this contemplative approach to Beethoven's Piano Sonata in e, Op.90.
Lupu's meditative style of playing may relate to what appears to be a certain shyness before his audience.

The New Yorker : critics : music
There were many moments during Radu Lupu’s recent traversal of the five Beethoven piano concertos, with the Cleveland Orchestra at Carnegie Hall, when that withdrawn, wounded figure came to life.
Lupu, a gentle genius of the piano, was born in Romania in 1945.
Although Lupu was sometimes in danger of floating away into his own private pianosphere, he periodically called upon his old competition-winner style to produce a burly, quasi-orchestral sound.

 The Friends of Chamber Music
Genius is a perilous word to toss around, but it has probably been applied to Lupu, now 60, as commonly as to any pianist of his generation.
Lupu might indeed hold that as a goal, too, but the subtlety and slight of hand that mark his imprint on the big masterworks of music are deep beyond almost any interpretation today.
Lupu's approach was not to seek clarity in this baffling piece but to revel in its enigmatic qualities.

Here, and in the Humoreske Op 20, Lupu took care to highlight the harmonies and, in particular, to sustain the emotional tension of the last bars of each piece so that it coalesced with the next, the transition from one to the other sometimes almost imperceptible.
Lupu seemed to play down the customary emphasis on Schumann's narrative allusions, instead bringing a profound insight into the compositional process, the debt to Bach emerging clearly, as did the often idiosyncratic rhythmic complexities.
Now Lupu's sound was more robust, the cast of the phrasing so deliberate as to be almost rhetorical.

Lupu plays with a rare sensitivity that brings us in a world of dreams.
While the sound on these four tracks is rather poor, that of the remaining performances on the disk (recorded at a separate 1976 session) is quite passable, certainly better than on the 1970 tracks.
Lupu's performance is singing with beautiful legato, and makes you want to listen and concentrate.

Carnegie Hall: Radu Lupu & Daniel Barenboim
The latest instalment was a four hand piano recital on Nov. 27, 2000, with Barenboim and Romanian pianist Radu Lupu.
After the intermission, Barenboim again had the upper hand for the "Grand Duo" Sonata in C major, D. In the opening Allegro, Barenboim sounded uncertain of what he was trying to do.
The Times also noted that occasionally "the thickness of four busy hands at work was near impenetrable." Barenboim and Lupu are both in their mid-fifties, and are both major label recording stars.
