The manor of Radyr is or was a sub-manor of Miskyn.

We left Radyr to make our way by car across what were the Up sidings, now in use as a large storage area for ballast, sleepers and other S and T groundwork fittings.
The view from the cabin is certainly not for the faint hearted; the large expanse of a derelict Radyr Yard in a sorry state but one that had to be recorded for posterity before the developers move in.
The former Radyr steam shed presided over the redundant Yard after the resignalling scheme (visible in year 2000 aerial photos, see multimap.co.uk) but was eventually demolished, thought to have been during 2001 or there abouts.

At this time there were two large manorial houses in Radyr: the original Radyr Isha, near the Church; and Radyr Ucha, on the site of the entrance to Radyr Comprehensive.
A new manor house, Radyr Court, was then built to the east of the Church, near the road to the ford over the Taff and Radyr Isha was destroyed to make way for a deer park.
Radyr Court was very impressive, similar in size, and possibly style, to The Van at Caerphilly.

Radyr could be considered an uninteresting place to visit, but in the days of these photographs it was still a very vibrant freight centre.
The yard at Radyr received coal tripped from various collieries in the valleys beyond, and longer distance trains were marshalled there.
It is a Class 116 Derby 3-car suburban unit, as was mostly commonly used in the valleys at that time.

Basically, anything which headed towards the valleys from Radyr would be seen at Taff's Well to take one or other of the three routes.
It was certainly still a place of character at that time, a steam-era infrastructure in terms of buildings and signals - a little time-warp really.
This was a set of photographs I took when visiting South Wales, just in the space of an hour or so on 26th September 1980, after the Radyr photographs were taken.

I have been able to visit regularly from the last days of steam to the present day and seen the locations' sad steady decline as a freight centre, the closure of the yard,and its rise as a modern park and ride passenger centre in the South Wales valley lines network.
With the demise of speedlink and the shrinking of the south Wales coalfield,Radyr lost its importance as a marshalling yard, and became a storage point for rolling stock being repaired at nearby Cathays carriage and wagon works.
During 1996-98 as part of the valleys resignalling and a faster service the whole of the Radyr area was remodelled including the recovery of the yard and demolition of old signal boxes such as Radyr jct, Radyr Quarry and Llandaff.

Lynwen Lloyd from Radyr Comprehensive in Cardiff was given clearance to return to work by both her doctor and head teacher in September.
Radyr Comprehensive School is built on a hillside across four different levels, making wheelchair access very difficult.

On Friday, June Davey, from Abertillery, south Wales, said her daughter faces a 40-minute round trip to go to the toilet because there are insufficient facilities at the school.
Although the lack of wheelchair access was established before the visits began, parents are still concerned by the situation.

The packed audience appreciated the chance to see the latest fashions and new colours for this season and the Tenovus Group was very grateful to the Howells team for, coming to Radyr and giving so freely of their time to help the Charity.
A very large sum was raised for research, care and counselling, as a result of their help, and many thanks go to all who were involved.
