Rafael Alberti (El Puerto de Santa María,16 December 1902 - El Puerto de Santa María,28 November 1999) was a Spanish poet, a member of the Generation of '27.
After flirting with a career as a painter, Alberti published his first books of poetry towards the end of the 1920s: Marinero en tierra ('Sailor on Dry Land', 1925), La Amante ('The Mistress', 1926) and El alba del alhelí ('The Dawn of the Wallflower', 1927).
Alberti was awarded the Premio Cervantes, the Spanish literary world's highest honour, in 1983.

One of the major Spanish poets of the 20th century, Alberti, born in Seville studied art in Madrid and enjoyed some success as a painter before 1923, when he began writing and publishing poems in magazines.
A member of the so-called Generation of 1927, Alberti helped to celebrate the tercentenary of Luis de Góngora in 1927, and Góngorist influence is apparent in the work published in that period, El alba del alhelí (1927; "The Dawn of the Wallflower") and Cal y canto (1928; "Quicklime and Song").

Rafael Alberti first gained prominence when he received the National Prize of Literature for Marinero en tierra (The Land-Locked Sailor) in 1925.
He was at his sister María's home in Rute, in the province of Córdoba, when the telegram arrived announcing the award for poetry, which he shared with Gerardo Diego, who won for Versos humanos (Human Verses).
A few days later Alberti left for Madrid to collect the badly needed prize money (five thousand pesetas), and to thank the members of the committee for their vote in his favor.

On this occasion, the presentation will center on Rafael Alberti, initially identified with the “1927 generation” of Spanish poets (García Lorca, Guillén, Salinas) who proposed a reevaluation and modernization of Spanish oral and written popular poetry.
Alberti’s publication of the leftist vanguard journal Octubre: Artistas y Escritores Revolucionarios (1933-1934), inspired by proletarian themes and culture, turned him into one of the new committed voices of the Spanish Left.
The study of Alberti’s discourse and cultural praxis will reveal the manner in which he articulated the notions of “the People”, "Spain", "Spanishness", "Modernity", “Vanguardism”, “Art and Aesthetics.” As such, they provide a central point of reference for approaching the debate over a viable modern Spanish identity presented by paradigmatic figures of Spanish vanguardism.
