  HON.  GEORGE  W.  RAFF
Raff yielded to the importunities of his friends and became the candidate of the Democratic party for the office of judge of the probate court of Stark county, being at the time but little more than twenty-six years of age.
Judge Raff was a man of strong individuality and indubitable probity, and his influence was ever exerted in the furtherance of all that was good and true, so that, standing in the white light of his exalted character and worthy career, we gain anew a respect for all that sterling manhood represents.
In politics Judge Raff gave his allegiance to the Democratic party, but in local affairs he was liberal in his attitude, while he was ever public-spirited, taking a deep interest in all that tended to conserve the prosperity and progress of his home city, to which he was deeply attached.

Joachim Raff - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In 1851, Raff's opera König Alfred was staged in Weimar, and five years later he moved to Wiesbaden where he largely devoted himself to composition.
Raff was very prolific, and by the end of his life was one of the best known German composers, though his work is largely forgotten today (the only one of his pieces received anything like regular performance today is a cavatina for violin and piano, sometimes played as an encore).
Raff also composed in most other genres, including concertos, opera, chamber music and works for solo piano.

Joseph Joachim Raff was born on 27 May 1822 in the small town of Lachen, on the shores of lake Zürich in Switzerland.
Slowly Raff distanced himself from the Liszt/Wagner New German School and began to regard his mission as combining the best of their prescription for the future of music with a more academic regard for the forms and traditions of the past such as counterpoint, fugue and sonata form.
Raff was appointed to a ten year term as the first director of the newly opened Hoch Conservatory in nearby Frankfurt, having been preferred over such illustrious younger candidates as Brahms and Rheinberger.
