Battle of Soissons (718) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Though Ragenfrid and Chilperic had begun with successes and Plectrude and Theudoald were removed early, Martel turned the tide of war and eventually forced the surrender of all his opponents.
After their defeat at the Battle of Vincy, Chilperic and Ragenfrid allied with Odo the Great, the independent duke of Aquitaine, and marched on Soissons.
The king fled with his ducal ally to the land south of the Loire and Ragenfrid fled to Angers.

Chilperic II - LoveToKnow 1911   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-29)
He became king of Neustria in 715, on which occasion he changed his name from Daniel to Chilperic.
At first he was a tool in the hands of Ragenfrid, the mayor of the palace.
Charles Martel, however, overthrew Ragenfrid, accepted Chilperic as king of Neustria, and, on the death of Clotaire IV., set him over the whole kingdom.

 Charles Martel
According to the Frankish custom he proclaimed a king in Austrasia in the person of the young Clotaire IV, but in reality Charles was the sole master -- the entry in the annals for the year 717 being "Carolus regnare coepit." Once in possession of Austrasia, Charles sought to extend his dominion over Neustria also.
In 719 he defeated Ragenfrid, the Neustrian mayor of the palace, at Soissons, and forced him to retreat to Angers.
Ragenfrid died in 731, and from that time Charles had no competitor in the western kingdom.

Charles Martel - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In 715, the Neustrian noblesse proclaimed one Ragenfrid mayor of their palace on behalf of, and apparently with the support of, Dagobert III, the young king, who in fact had the legal authority to select a mayor, though by this time the Merovingian dynasty had lost most such regal powers.
In 718, Chilperic responded to Charles' new ascendancy by making an alliance with Odo the Great (or Eudes, as he is sometimes known), the duke of Aquitaine, who had made himself independent during the civil war in 715, but was again defeated, at Soissons, by Charles.
They were easily defeated (724), but Ragenfrid gave up his sons as hostages in turn for keeping his county.

The king, Chilperic II, was in the power of Ragenfrid, mayor of the palace of Neustria, who joined forces with the Frisians in Holland in order to eliminate Charles.
Plectrude imprisoned Charles and tried to govern in the name of her grandchildren, but Charles escaped, gathered an army, and defeated the Neustrians in battles at Amblève near Liège (716) and at Vincy near Cambrai (717).
He attacked Aquitaine, whose ruler, Eudes (Odo), had been an ally of Ragenfrid, but Charles did not gain effective control of southern France until late in his reign.

King Charles (Karl) Martel "The Hammer," Mayor of Austrasia, King of France
The king, Chilperic II, was in the power of Ragenfrid, mayor of the palace of Neustria, who joined forces with an enemy of the Franks, Radbod, king of the Frisians in Holland, in order to eliminate Charles.
Plectrude managed to imprison Charles, but he escaped, gathered an army, defeated King Chilperic and Mayor Ragenfrid, and conquered the hostile Neustrians.
His success made resistance by Plectrude and the Austrasians useless; realizing the spirit and power of young Charles, they submitted, and by 719 Charles alone governed the Franks as mayor.

It is not likely that he ever took the title of king.
In 718, he appears as the ally of Chilperic II of Neustria and the Mayor of the Palace Ragenfrid, who may have offered recognition of his kingship over Aquitaine.
They were fighting against the Austrasian mayor of the palace, Charles Martel; but after the defeat of Chilperic at Soissons in 719, he probably made peace with Charles by surrendering to him the Neustrian king and his treasures.
