  WHAT THE BUDDHA TAUGHT: Remembering Dr. Walpola Rahula
Rahula influenced generations of monks, including me. Reading his `Heritage of the Bhikkhu' gave my whole generation of monks, a new understanding of our role in society, and gave us courage to practise a Buddhism which was both traditional and in touch with our modern society.
Rahula was later instrumental in encouraging the formation of the first Theravada temple in the United States, the Washington Vihara, against fierce opposition from traditionalists in Sri Lanka.
Rahula, whose initial support and constant encouragement were fundamental to the establishment and growth of the teachings of the Buddha in this country.

When Rahula was still a boy, the Buddha discussed with him aspects of Dharma that were suitable for the young and in such a way as he could understand and remember.
Rahula was trained in the Ten Precepts and monastic discipline and when he was eighteen, the Buddha decided that he was ready for meditation and then gave him advice on how to practise.
It is likely that Rahula kept himself in the background so that he could not be accused of taking advantage of being the son of the Enlightened One.

Bhante Yagavacara Rahula recently completed a six-month-long trek and teaching tour through the Himalayan mountains and northern India.
