  Horatio Stratton Carter Sunderland
Horatio Stratton Carter better known as Raich Carter, was born on 21st December 1913, in Hendon, Sunderland, Tyne and wear.
Raich Carter was a Sunderland lad who captained his home town club to the league title and their first FA Cup final victory.
Raich was a legend of the game either side of the 2nd World War, not only for the Lads, also with England, Derby County and as player manager of Hull City.

Horatio Stratton "Raich" Carter (February 21, 1913 in Hendon, Sunderland - October 9, 1994 in Willerby, near Hull) was one of the greatest English footballers of the pre-war era.
Carter was also capped several times for England as an inside forward.
Carter also played cricket for Derbyshire in 1946 and for Durham in the Minor counties league.

Under Carter's stewardship as player-manager, City made a phenomenal start to the 1948-49 campaign winning their first nine games, and ended the season as Third Division North champions, as well as FA Cup Quarter-Finalists.
Raich's personal contribution, which included him netting seventeen goals in all competitions, saw him narrowly miss the Footballer of the year title, coming in second place.
Raich Carter quit in dramatic fashion in September 1951, and he was conspicuous in his absence on the playing field.

Carter's debut on April 3 1948 came too late to help Hull's faltering promotion bid and they eventually finished fifth, but he was undoubtedly the star of the Third Division and was able to demonstrate all of his skills on the field.
Carter was persuaded to come back for the tail end of the season and led the club in their successful fight against relegation before retiring, taking his final Football League playing record up to 218 goals in 451 games.
Raich Carter was one of the greatest inside-forwards ever produced by England, being often referred to as 'The Maestro' for the way he took control of games.

FOOTBALL star Raich Carter was born at the Ocean Queen public house, in Tower Street, Hendon, in December 1913.
Raich, who started playing football for his school at the age of 10, was soon plucked from obscurity to represent Durham Schoolboys.
Carter turned to full-time football management after his playing career ended – taking charge of Leeds in 1953 and leading them to promotion to the first division in 1956.
