The comics were aimed at an older audience.

RAIJIN COMICS Issue 46 will be the last issue you will be receiving.
It's printed at Silver Age comic size, just slightly larger than all the other comics on the rack, but not large enough to call "oversized" or "treasury format." That means the book fits very snugly into the Silver Age size bags and boards that I use.
I don't know for certain that this is the same comic, but I laughed out loud when I saw this web site, with the DOOM comic book.

At $4.95 per week, Raijin Comics is certainly an investment, but at well over 100 pages a week with no advertisements, the magazine is a far better value than buying normal 32 page comics at $3 each.
Shonen Jump and Raijin Comics are both published in Japanese format right to left, but while Shonen Jump alters its original artwork and sound effects to suit American readers, with rare exception Raijin Comics leaves Japanese text, sound effects and background art intact, the way its creators intended it to be.
Raijin Comics is English language manga translated and published under the direct supervision of the manga creators themselves.

Raijin goes "on hiatus": SBC also passes along word that manga publisher Raijin Comics will stop publication of its magazine and comics lines.
In the letter, Raijin says its magazine and comics lines will be "on hiatus for the time being" while the publisher takes "time out to come up with ways to broaden the appeal of our publications, retooling stories and overall editorial content."

Raijin’s primary demographic is 16-35 year old males with a halo effect in the female audience, while Shonen Jump is geared towards much a much younger audience.
They explain that currently in Raijin Comics as in all other North American anthologies, Manga is published first in Japan then translated into other languages at a later time.

I don't know how popular a weekly anthology that requires readers to retrain themselves to read in a different order will be with American readers, but the value of the book (244 pages for $4.95) may well convince readers to overlook such inconveniences.
(One thing that bugged me was that in the comics, all the word balloons are laid out right-to-left; but in the text pieces that follow each series, the columns read left-to-right.
Titled RAIJIN GAME & ANIME, it covers "the top three forms of entertainment in the land of the rising sun" - manga, anime, and games - with an obvious focus on the latter two.

As for why they've been having such a hard time competing, my guess would be that only a handful of their titles have really generated any interest, and even those have been buried under the massive stacks of new titles that larger publishers like Viz and Tokyopop are able to release every month.
You also have to consider that most of Raijin's titles (being aimed almost exclusively at older male readers) have a more limited appeal, than those found in, as you suggested, Shonen Jump.
One of Viz's earlier attempts at publishing a manga mag, the adult comic oriented Pulp (which ran some really great comics when it was still around), ultimately shared a similiar fate for the very same reasons.

Fist of the Blue Sky is a mildly humorous comic, mainly focused on fighting and Japanese jokes, like when a teacher alludes that women sweat and is back-handed for thinking such a thing.
City Hunter is a dramatic comic focused on the life of Saeba Ryo, a professional bounty hunter and lecherous girl chaser, who spends his time helping pretty women with their problems.

It seems that Raijin is on a break, as of the June 2004 issue.
RAIJIN COMICS Issue 46 and the June GRAPHIC NOVELS will be the last issue you will be printing.
Raijin was aiming at a broader market than Pulp but I am sad that I may never read another page of the Revenge of Mouflon or Bow Wow Wata, luckily The First President of Japan finished.

I can appreciate that in a time when so many comics are so high concept that they get lost in their own mythologies right off the bat.
The point to all of this is that THE PERHAPANAUTS is the kind of offbeat book that's open to a wide enough swath of the comics reading population that it would be a shame to see it get lost in the flood of new titles arriving on shelves these days.
The previous attempt at reprinting it in fl and white was disastrous, as the fl and white printing was taken from the color comics, not the original fl and white art.

Issue #46 of Raijin Comics will be the last issue of that series to ship, while the June graphic novels will be the last to ship in that category.
While neither Raijin Comics nor its closest competitor in format, Shonen Jump do what could be called well within the direct market, both were eyeing bookstores and other outlets for their best chance at audience penetration.
The move by Raijin to suspend publication may be indicative of what is to come in the rest of 2004 and into 2005.

While Marvel and DC Comics have dropped letter columns, the Archie titles still give their fans a place to be heard and seen.
While most of the stories are done in fl and white, RAIJIN will sometimes print their opening pages in color, if they were originally done that way.
All of which are nice, but it's the series themselves that made the thick comic a weekly treat for me. The monthly RAIJIN will add pages to the package, but it won't deliver that weekly kick.

Entertainment, the U.S. sister company to Japan-based Coamix, has signed a distribution agreement with Diamond Comic Distributors for the distribution of Raijin Comics, it was announced today by Nobuhiko Horie, Chairman, Gutsoon Entertainment and Coamix.
Entertainment’s also announced a new lower shelf price for their flagship title, Raijin Comics at a single-issue rate of $4.95, which is down $2.00 from the original single-issue rate plans.
Raijin Comics is set to debut on December 4th.

Art comics have been attempting to migrate to regular bookstores out of necessity for years now, and recently it's begun to finally pay off; Fantagraphics, the only company I know anything remotely about in terms of sales, now does more business in bookstores than it does in the comics shops.
Marvel Comics seems to have gotten to the "fool me twice" portion of their relationship with comics retailers, and for evidence of this we turn now to Newsarama, which recently sent a questionaire to a number of shopowners concerning Marvel's upcoming Rawhide Kid series.
Saturday I told you about the way Marvel Comics was using the numbers from initial orders in the Direct Sales Market to justify calling itself the top-selling comic book company, despite the fact that when you factored in re-orders the company has for several months dropped to the #2 slot behind DC Comics.

Indeed, some transformed into comics strips which "starred" Raijin editors and artists...almost as if they were designed to boost the morale of the title's staff.
From time to time, RAIJIN COMICS would omit one of its regular series and run an installment of THE CLIMBERS SAGA by writer/artist Murakami Motoka.
RAIJIN COMICS had its ups and down, but I did enjoy the title from start to finish.

Interesting that someone involved with Raijin is heading things up, maybe there's a faint glimmer of hope that their titles will eventually continue under this banner.
Western comics: Many comics have no resolution in mind, they will simply be churned out as long as they are profitable.
Raijin's been around for a pretty long time, but the first game in Slam Dunk didn't even end yet.

Wacky as the Silver Age of Comics could be on occasion, there were times when the imagination and skill of its creators just plain soared, carrying readers with them.
RAIJIN COMICS #5 featured THE BAREFOOT CLIMBER, a complete-in-40-pages tale about Kamba, a 15-year-old Sherpa boy who attempts to climb a treacherous wall of ice and rock to prove his manhood.
As a teenager training himself to be a comics writer, I learned quite a bit from it...though I quickly abandoned the two-column description/copy format it showed for the writing of comics scripts.
