  SDRM Rail Gauge Derivation
The only standard gauge in the U.S. is a defacto 4' 8 1/2" as recommended by the A.R.A. committee on standard wheel and track gauges in October of 1896.
Great Britain, on the other hand, has a true standard track gauge of the same dimensions because it was mandated by an act of Parliament in 1846 that all railroads should be built to the same gauge as the Stockton and Darlington, England's (and the world's) first public rail line to use locomotives.
America had a multiplicity of gauges at the beginning of the Civil War, but the modern standard was most common in New England and 5' was the standard in the South.

Rail tracks - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The rail is fastened to the sleepers with rail spikes or with lag screws and baseplates (or fishplates) for wooden sleepers or Pandrol clips, [1] and [2] for cement or concrete sleepers.
Rail tracks are normally laid on a bed of coarse stone chippings known as a ballast, which combines resilience, some amount of flexibility, and good drainage; however, track can also be laid on or into concrete (a slab track).
Joints are used in continuously welded rail when necessary; instead of a joint that passes straight across the rail, producing a loud noise and shock when the wheels pass over it, two sections of rail are cut at a steep angle and put together with a gap between them (a breather switch).

Iran to the west uses standard gauge, as does China to the east; to the south, Pakistan uses 1676 mm gauge, while to the north, the central Asian republics of Turkmenia, Uzbekistan, and Tajikistan use 1520 mm gauge.
Gauge rationalisation in Africa is facilitated since a four rail dual gauge of 1000mm and 1067mm contains a hidden gauge, which can be made to be the world standard gauge of 1435mm.
Since the existing narrow gauge track is quite likely of a "pioneer" standard (with sharp curves and low capacity light rails), substantial reconstruction of the existing lines are needed, so gauge unification would be sensible.

Rail gauge is the distance between two rails of a railroad.
The gauges were sufficiently close to allow inter-operation of trains between the two countries, and in recent years both have been adjusted to common of 1668 mm.
Since the existing narrow gauge track is quite likely of a pioneer standard (with sharp curves and low capacity light rails) substantial reconstruction of the existing line is probably needed anyhow, so they may as well unify the gauge at the same time.

Rail Gauge is the spacing between the two running rails of a railway system.
Rails must be also be tested periodically via x-ray or ultra-sonic techniques to check for metal fatigue and stress cracking, which can lead to actual, breaks in the rail structure itself.
When rail conditions become slippery due to weather such as rain or ice, or simply morning dew upon the rails, rail vehicles have a tendency to slide or skid along the rails.

Rail transport - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Rail transport is an energy-efficient means of mechanised land transport.
Most rail systems, including urban rapid transit (metro/subway) systems, are highly subsidised and have never or rarely been profitable; however, their indirect benefits are often great.
Rail lines that carry little traffic are often built with a single track used by trains in both directions; on rail lines like these, "crossovers", "passing loops" or "passing sidings", which consist of short stretches of double track, are provided along the line to allow trains to pass each other, and travel in opposite directions.

Generally narrow-gauge rail systems have rail distances of either 24 or 30 inches while the standard for light and heavy railroads is 56.5 inches.
Narrow-gauge rail transit systems are more conducive to pedestrian, bicyclist and automotive vehicular interaction due to low operating speeds and "friendly" design scale.

The terms scale and gauge are two of the most confused terms in the model railroad hobby.
O Gauge is not a scale, but the term is used to define O Scale trains as well as toy trains that run on track that is 1.25" between the outside rails (5 scale feet).
The most correct definition of O gauge as it has evolved today is as follows: It is term used to describe a group of toy trains that is roughly based on ¼" scale and runs on non-scale three rail track that is 1.25" between the outside rails.

Light rail and freight trains or commuter trains do not mix because the light rail is so flimsy by comparison, that any collision between the two would likely result in the thorough destruction of the light rail vehicle and the death of most of its occupants.
However, the FRA will not allow light rail trains to be run on tracks connected to the regular railroads with the possibility of regular freight trains running on the same tracks.

The narrow gauge trains they use on G scale track (1:20) would better be termed Xn3, since the narrow gauge trains that operate on G are actually for a large scale than G and would need X-scale (or some other designator) structures to match.
G-sized narrow gauge trains (1:32) that could run on O scale would be termed Gn3, to conform with the other narrow-gauge scale designators.
Most guys in standard gauge three-rail probably wouldn't like it because the narrow gauge models would be considerably larger than their standard gauge models--just the opposite of what it would be in "real life" if a narrow gauge line had an interchange point with a standard gauge line (which often was the case).
