Shooter game - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Shooter games cover a fairly broad spectrum of sub-genres that have the commonality of controlling a character who is usually armed with a firearm that can be freely aimed.
The term rail shooter traditionally describes games where the player cannot control their own movement, as if their path travels along a fixed 'rail'.
A run-and-gun shooter is a combination platform game and scrolling shooter, this type of game involves a character running along a plane while shooting enemies in multiple directions, as in games like Contra and Metal Slug.

Rail shooter - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In a rail shooter the player control is limited to directing where to fire a virtual gun; the player does not have control over the ultimate path their avatar takes from the start to the end.
Although the strictest definition of rail shooter includes genres such as a scrolling shooter and light gun games such as Operation Wolf, in practice the term is used mostly to describe games that don't fall within those two genres (e.g.
Some rail shooters allow the player to control a single aspect of motion; for example, the Time Crisis series, which gave players the ability to hide behind a barrier.

Ravage D.C.X. is unabashedly a "rail" game, in which the player follows a pre-determined path (involving limited freedom of movement) within six worlds and Washington, DC while fighting a seemingly endless array of enemies.
Well, I am hereby announcing that I actually love rail games, and I firmly do not believe that their gameplay is any less challenging or provocative than games with more freedom of movement.
Instead, rail games are in some ways a purer form of arcade shooter, where the premium is placed not on strategy or ability to navigate and find secret passageways, but rather on skill in targeting and destroying small and fast-moving adversaries whizzing by as one pursues one's objectives.

GBAtemp Forum -> Review - Star Fox Assault (Gamecube)
First revealed at E3 2003, the Namco-developed shooter turned few heads at that event, mostly attracting interest only from Star Fox diehards who hoped the game would be a long-awaited return to the series' roots.
While this all may sound fairly basic, the result is surprisingly fulfilling if you're a shooter fan, though never nearly as satisfying as the sustained, seat-of-your-pants excitement of a well-made rail-shooting level.
And while there is certainly potential for future chapters in the series to further refine and expand upon the framework of free-range levels presented here, this potential fails to obscure the fact that the Star Fox design was not ready to shoulder such massive alterations in a single installment of the series.
