Trail - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Trails, by their nature, tend to become drainage channels and eventually gullies if the drainage is not properly controlled.
When a trail passes across a flat area that is not wet, often all that is required is to clear brush, tree limbs and undergrowth to produce a clear, walkable trail.
Trails that ascend steep slopes may use switchbacks (also called hairpins), but switchback design and construction is a specialized topic that takes great care.

Massachusetts Bicycle Facilities Inventory Report - Berkshire County Regional Planning Commission
The Housatonic Valley Greenway and the Ashuwillticook Rail Trail are still gathering support which could lead to funding for design and construction.
One of the segments of the Housatonic Valley Greenway ends very close to the potential southern terminus of the Ashuwillticook trail as well, and practical options appear to exist to link the two paths with an on-street route on an industrial connector road which could include specific bicycle-friendly features in its design.
It was proposed and funded as a bicycle trail in the late 1970’s, but local concerns about potential misuse by motorcyclists stopped the project.

 The Family Beat
When the 11-mile paved trail, stretching from the Berkshire Mall in Lanesboro to the Berkshire Visitors Bureau Visitors' Center in the middle of Adams, opened four years ago, an adult group was denied permission from the state Department of Conservation and Recreation to use a motorized ATV (all-terrain vehicle) for patrolling the trail.
Mountain-bike trails appear immune to objections, mainly because most are deep in the woods, not close to homes.
Constructed at a cost of more than $2 million by the state on an abandoned rail trail linking Pittsfield to North Adams, the trail had been used for decades by snowmobilers, who had maintained crude bridges and groomed the snow.

Both will be a left turn and the rail trail parking is immediately after that turn on both sides of the Mall access road.
The trail was empty (rain and/or church keeping them home?) so we barreled along.
If you want to go on the 15 mile ride continue on Rt 8 to Farnam Rd. There will again be signs for the Rail trail.

 Berkshires Week
The Ashuwillticook Rail Trail that runs from Lanesboro just south of the Route 8 entrance to the Berkshire Mall all the way past Cheshire and eventually to the town of Adams is a complete delight for those who want a little (or a lot) of exercise while looking at nature at its most splendid.
The Pittsfield and North Adams Railroad first developed the corridor in 1845 with hopes of eventually extending it to Rutland, Vt. The Boston and Albany Railroad then took it over, and the trains hauled limestone from a number of quarries that were developed up the line.
There were picnic tables set up along the grass and we thought how much fun it might be to bring lunch some sunny noontime and just watch the water ripple as the ducks and geese took off and landed.
