Rail transport refers to the land transport of passengers and goods along railways or railroads.
Rail transport is one of the most energy efficient means of mechanised land transport known.
Rail transport is also one of the safest modes of transport, and also makes a highly efficient use of space: a double tracked rail line can carry more passengers or freight in a given amount of time than a four-laned road.

A light one- or two-car rail vehicle running through the streets is by convention not considered a train but rather a tram, trolley, light-rail vehicle or streetcar, but the distinction is not always strict.
The term light rail is sometimes used for a modern tram, but it may also mean an intermediate form between a tram and a train, similar to metro except that it may have level crossings.
Rail freight is most economic when freight is being carried in bulk and over long distances, but is less suited to short distances and small loads.

Rail transport modelling   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
Model railroading (US) or Railway modelling (UK) is a hobby in which rail transport systems are modeled at a reduced scale, or ratio.
In the UK, S scale modelling is largely the preserve of a dedicated few hand-building models or using a small number of available kits and parts, mostly depicting standard gauge prototypes but also narrow and broad gauge subjects too.
Many early finescale modellers in the UK used this standard and it is still in use (albeit with the gauge now slightly adjusted to 18.2 mm), although P4 has superseded it for most.

The modeled world includes rail vehicles (locomotives and rolling stock), tracks, signalling, scenery (roads, buildings, vehicles, model figures and natural features such as streams, hills, canyons, etc. The earliest forms of model railways are the 'Carpet Railways' which first appeared in the 1840s.
One particularly famous model railway club is the Tech Model Railroad Club (TMRC) at MIT, which in the 1950s pioneered the automatic control of track-switching amongst hobbyists by using advanced technology for the time andmdash; telephone relays.
Many early finescale modellers in the UK used this standard and it is still in use (albeit with the gauge now slightly adjusted to 18.

Model railway scales and gauges are standardized in NEM 010, which covers several gauges for each scale.
These model railway standards are based on the full size prototype standards and the scale model operational reliability is therefore reduced in comparison to the models conforming to the normal NMRA standards.

Formal Modelling and Analysis of Computerized Control in Rail Transport: A Case Study (1995)
Abstract: Introduction The formal modelling and analysis of computerized real-time control systems is emerging as a new and important topic of research in both the control systems and software engineering literature.
Formal modelling helps makes precise the specifications of what must be done which in turn makes possible the formal analysis required to establish guarantees about certain aspects of system behavior.
