When pulling into a station, the commuters on the platforms walk, shuffle, talk, and do what commuters do because they're actual commuters that were captured when the Railfan team took to the tracks with their cameras and started spooling miles and miles of footage for the game.
When we first laid eyes on Railfan, it was difficult to tell if the game's graphics were being rendered polygonally or if we were watching cleverly filtered streaming video of the actual train lines.
In Railfan, you'll at last get a chance to guide your train on a line with a good old fashion American name like "Brown." And no more going between places with such strange names as Yoyogi and Takadanobaba.

 What is a Railfan?
The purpose of this statement is to familiarize law enforcement with individuals known as "railfans," and hence, mitigate uncertainty regarding these individuals and their hobby.
Railfans are a diverse group; there is no common thread that binds them, although many can identify a childhood experience that piqued their interest.
The author, a railfan since 1972, and a 20-year veteran of the armed forces, is now a DoD contractor employed in the Air Force Special Operations community with involvement in information technology, multi-media production, technical writing, and test and evaluation of electronic warfare systems.

The emphasis is on "fun," as the objective for most railfans is to enjoy themselves.
However, there is more to life than just taking pictures of trains (especially if your spouse and family have accompanied you on this trip!), so it's also pretty nice to know where a neato Bed and Breakfast or motel is, a good place to eat, etc.

 Railfan.net Forums - A Message from the Moderator
Any free time I did find, I found myself doing things other than railfanning, train watching, etc. It isn't that I had other priorities to take care of first in my free time, but more that the hobby didn't appeal to me for some reason.
I began to think that railfanning had lost it's luster to me and that the thing I relied on to help relieve stress and a thing that provided me an opportunity to just relax and enjoy myself was no longer an interest.
I really don't know if I was just too busy or if I had become "burned out" on railfanning, seeing the same stuff time after time on the same NS line.

My suggestion would be to take a backpack with food and drink and reading material, and hike either left or right from the station, until you found a spot you liked.
You'll not be bothered by other railfans or over-zealous railroad police up here, but use your head, be safe, and stay off railroad property.

 Railfan from Rochelle,IL Arrested
I seen in posts on MN Rail and Illini Rail a railfan from Rochelle, IL, Dan Ferrari(sic?), was arrested for trying to steal a builders plate off a UP unit that was on display in Rochelle during Lincoln Highway Days there.
The conductor who set that engine out at Rochelle (who incidentally is also a railfan) was saying that they hadn't even secured it or cut away from it and people (fans I would quess, but I don't know for sure) were all over that engine.
He is not the first, nor the last that will continue to give railfans a bad rap.

2002's railfan trip was a road trip of about 5800 miles around the western part of the US and Canada.
Last year's railfan trip was to the National Train Show in Seattle, Washington, with a week before and after the train show for foaming!
This year's railfanning expedition was to drive to the National Train Show in Cincinnati, while burning a lot of film on the way there and back, as well as stopping at various hobby shops.
