Railroads reshaped the world in the mid to late 1800's and weigh as significantly in history as the invention of computers.
While Sid Meier's Railroad Tycoon is now aging and being eclipsed -- as railroads themselves were over time -- by new advances, it still remains a tribute to railroading history and one of the most entertaining strategy/empire-building games in existence.
Railroad Tycoons have divided into two camps: purists who think Dispatcher Operation is actually entertaining and those of us who believe life is too short for worrying about train collisions.

Railroad Tycoon is an economic simulation and computer strategy game.
Railroad Tycoon was written by game designer Sid Meier and published by MicroProse and though it shares the "Tycoon" suffix, it is entirely unrelated to other Microprose games such as RollerCoaster Tycoon and Transport Tycoon, which were developed by British programmer Chris Sawyer.
The second sequel, Railroad Tycoon 3, was released in 2003 featuring a full 3D environment, allowing for overpasses and tunnels (tunnels were present in the original but lost in RT2), and much improved graphics over its predecessors.

The idea of Railroad Tycoon (to build rail lines and thus a rail empire) has been taken to the highest level with a beautiful game engine.
Having been a fan of Transport Tycoon, an old title which is not supported by my current PC and which I found endlessly challenging I thought that this sounded like an ideal replacement.
With this in mind, I eagerly awaited the release of Railroad Tycoon 3 with its all singing and dancing 3D graphics and claims that it is as stable as a rock (unlike SimCity 4).

The Play: Railroad Tycoon was co-designed by Glenn Dover and Martin Wallace and plays like a lighter variant of Wallace's own Age of Steam (for many people the best train game ever made).
