A worm is an elongated soft-bodied invertebrate animal.
Many insect larvae are called worms, such as the railroad worm, woodworm, glowworm, or bloodworms.
When an animal, such as a dog, is said to have worms, it means that the dog is infested with parasitic worms such as tapeworm (or the fungal ringworm).

 The Ava-Mansfield Train
Old picture postcard of the railroad that ran from Ava to Mansfield, contributed by an area resident, John Lillyquist.
As soon as the railroad connected Ava and Mansfield, all the people with canned tomatoes and railroad ties (the main product from the Ozarks forests at that time) found it more convenient to ship them from Ava, than go overland by different routes, as they had been doing.
The railroad even encouraged more people to grow tomatoes and log the forests, because this new transportation option made it easier and less expensive to take those goods to markets outside the Ozarks.

Apple maggot - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (via CobWeb/3.1 planetlab2.netlab.uky.edu)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-14)
The apple maggot (Rhagoletis pomonella), also known as railroad worm, is a pest of several fruits, mainly apples.
Other "worms" inside apples can be confused with the apple maggot, however caterpillars often feed in the apple’s core while apple maggots feed on the fruit flesh.
The young "worm" that hatches consumes the fruit (rarely will the larva leave the fruit while it is still hanging on the tree), and causes it to bruise and decay and finally drop before ripening.

The Corn Earworm, aka Tomato Fruit Worm, Tobacco Budworm, Cotton Bollworm, is such a successful pest that it lives practically everywhere in the world between the parallels of 50° north and south latitudes.
In tomatoes the worms feed on the partially ripened fruit, restlessly moving from one tomato to another; pods of lima beans are sometimes invaded.
In southern gardens, the tomato fruit worm may be controlled by applying pinches of bait to the fruit clusters.

 Cumberland Valley Railroad Hagerstown
The last named railroad was waylaid by politcal opponents of Thaddeus Stevens and Governor Rittner who had already spent $760,000 on the route.
The critics named the route the Tape Worm Railroad and declared it totally impractical-the WM proved them wrong by building on the same plan, a line that still operates today.
Anyhow, by now the Cumberland Valley Railroad was built to Chambersburg and the Franklin Railroad proceeded as planned, but now as an extention to Hagerstown to pick up that town's freight and National Pike traffic.

Primeheadlines » The Worm-Train Theory: A Satire On Evolution
There is overwhelming evidence suggesting that if you incubate three dozen worms in a solution of amino acids and carbon compounds for approximately one and a half million years they will eventually evolve into the Long Island Railroad.
Digging through the ruins of an old Long Island Railroad yard, they came across a fossil of a fish believed to be extinct for billions of years.
In fact, after taking a radiocarbon reading of the fossil and the brown paper bag it was found in, they confirmed that their find dated back to the “big bang,” give or take six months.

There are some species of fire flies in which the female remains in the form of the larva, or worm, even as the adult beetle.
If you ever find one of these individuals in an old, rotten log or under a board on the ground, put it in a jar and take it into a very dark room, and you will observe the dull blue glow coming from the rings around her body that are yellow in the light.
Once it has figured this out it begins flashing, drawing males of other kinds that were assuming they were about to meet an appropriate mate, and once that other beetle is close enough it is grabbed and consumed, ending what otherwise had started out as a wonderful evening for that main course.
