Rail tracks - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Rail tracks are normally laid on a bed of coarse stone chippings known as ballast, which combines resilience, some amount of flexibility, and good drainage; however, track can also be laid on or into concrete (this is called slab track).
After new segments of rail are laid, or defective rails replaced (welded in), the rails are artificially heated so that they expand (this is called stressing), they are then fastened (clipped) to the sleepers in their expanded form.
Joints are used in continuously welded rail when necessary; instead of a joint that passes straight across the rail, producing a loud noise and shock when the wheels pass over it, two sections of rail are cut at a steep angle and put together with a gap between them (a breather switch).

Jengel and Fatro's Rail Gun Page: Introduction
A rail gun in it's simplest form is a pair of conducting rails separated by a distance L and with one rail connected to the positive and one the negative side of a power source supplying voltage V and current I. A conducting projectile bridges the gap L between the rails, completing the electrical circuit.
As current I flows through the rails, a magnetic field B is generated with an orientation dictated by the right hand rule and with a magnitude governed by equation 1.
The speed of a rail gun slug is determined by several factors; the applied force, the amount of time that force is applied, and friction.
