  Ferry - LoveToKnow 1911
FERRY (from the same root as that of the verb " to fare,"' to journey or travel, common to Teutonic languages, cf.
In a car-ferry or train-ferry railway cars or complete trains are conveyed across a piece of water in vessels which have railway lines laid on their decks, so that the vehicles run on and off them on their own wheels.

Rail transport - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Securing railways is often more difficult than for other modes of transport because stations are designed with easy access and high capacity rather than security as their primary goals; most trains make many stops, rendering any sort of passenger screening difficult; and securing the tracks as they run through cities and the countryside is impractical.
The first railways in Great Britain (also known as wagonways) were built in the early 17th century, mainly for transporting coal from the mine to the water side where it could be loaded on to a boat.
Railways soon spread throughout the United Kingdom and through the world, and became the dominant means of land transport for nearly a century, until the invention of aircraft and automobiles, which prompted a gradual decline in railways.

Train ferry - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Historically the lake Tinnsjøen railway ferry linked Tinnosbanen and Rjukanbanen, transporting goods to and from Rjukan and the Norsk Hydro deuterium factory, as seen in the movie The Heroes of Telemark, starring Kirk Douglas.
This ferry is operated, as rail cars with flammable and hazardous materials are not permitted in the former Pennsylvania Railroad tunnels under Manhattan and the Hudson River.
While no train ferries (as far as it is known) have met with disaster at sea, car ferries such as the Herald of Free Enterprise, which share some of the weaknesses of train ferries, have met with disaster.

Ferry stock has to be equipped to an internationally agreed standard, European railways used the air brake whereas the British used vacuum brakes, but the European screw link coupling could be used with a British coupling hook (British built stock had the buffers packed out as the European coupling was longer than its British counterpart).
Ferry stock was all fitted with screw couplings and until the 1980's the buffers used were heavier than the British standard designs, they also carry non-standard lettering and a 12 digit international ferry wagon number in place of the usual national number marking as described in the section on Livery - Ferry Stock.
The ferry CCT was shorter than the later standard design and had no windows and only one pair of side doors, the ferry GUV was the same size as the British Railways standard design but differed in having no windows and only two pairs of side doors.

 Rail transport
A railroad or railway is a guided means of land transport, designed to be used by trains, for transporting both passengers and freight.
Railways soon spread throughout Britain and through the world, and became the dominant means of land transport for nearly a century, until the invention of aircraft and automobiles, which prompted a gradual decline in railways.
In Britain the term railway is often used to refer to the complete organisation of tracks, trains, stations, signaling, timetables and the organising companies which collectively make up a coordinated railway system, while permanent way or p/way refers to the tracks alone.
