Locomotive boilers were originally made of wrought iron but a steel boiler was first used in the UK by George Tosh of the Maryport and Carlisle Railway in 1862.
A locomotive with a steel boiler had appeared in Canada two years before in 1860 and it gradually became general around the world from that time although wrought iron was still being used in the UK on some railways 30 years later.
Railway slang for the occurrence of the draught being so strong that hot coals are sucked from the fire bed, drawn through the tubes and thrown out of the chimney.

The date the locomotive entered the preservation scene (not necessarily the same date as being withdrawn from `main line' service as many locomotives had a second career on the industrial scene after withdrawal).
This field is the most problematical as locomotives often move between sites (railtours, loans etc) and hence may not be at the location shown.

 South Devon Railway Locomotive Summary
It is a little small for general day to day work on the South Devon Railway but comes into its own on open days and at quieter times of the year.
3205 is one of 120 locomotives of the 2251 Class designed by Collett for use on lightly laid lines in Wales and to replace ageing locomotives from various constituent Companies that were absorbed into the GWR at the 1922 grouping.
In 1998 it moved to its present base on the South Devon Railway where it has had to receive attention to a broken crank axle sustained in traffic on the West Somerset Railway just a week before its planned move to Buckfastleigh.

Members of the Bluebell Railway Preservation Society are eligible to volunteer to work in the Locomotive Department.
All volunteers start as "cleaners", and as the name suggests, the main task is to clean the engines each day to a high standard, but many other labouring jobs connected with the servicing and daily maintenance of steam engines are also required.
Working on the footplate of a steam engine requires you to be able to "do as you're told" as the most junior member of the team, and because we all work together and "live" together, this engenders a very close-knit social scene "after hours".
