Class Definition for Class 246 - RAILWAY SWITCHES AND SIGNALS
Day or night signals or combinations of same used for the purpose mentioned and usually adapted to be supported by or attached to the roof or outer wall of a station or signal cabin and provided with means for operating them from within the same.
The combined functions of the home and distant signals are sometimes performed by a three-position signal, indicating by its three positions, respectively, the presence of a train in the block ahead, the second block ahead, or that both blocks are clear.
Systems in which the signal clearing operations require the cooperation of the operators at each end of the block and also the absence of trains from the block, which when present, by electrical means, render it impossible to clear the signals.

  Model Railway Signal Project
The first reed switch changes the signal to red as the train passes, then further along the track a second reed switch changes the signal back to green ready for the next train.
The isolated section of track just in front of the signal is switched off by the relay when the signal is red so a train will stop automatically at the red signal.
Note that railway signals have red at the bottom, unlike road traffic lights where red is at the top.

[IRFCA] Indian Railways FAQ: Signalling Systems
Semaphore signals are set up so that when viewed from the part of the track for which the signal is intended, the semaphore arm extends to the left of the mast on which it mounted.
Colour-light signals that are not in use (just set up but not yet commissioned, or in the process of being decommissioned) are often turned to point away from the tracks, so that it is clear to all locomotive drivers that the signal is not in service.
A signal or station that he is approaching is referred to as being in front, and one that he has passed is said to be in the rear.

  Railway signal - Definition, explanation
A signal is a mechanical or electrical device that indicates to train drivers information about the state of the line ahead, and therefore whether they must stop or may start, or instructions on what speed they may drive their train.
This type of signal does use a (parabolic) reflector and thus lower power lamps and a less directional lens system are used since there is a far greater percentage of the light available to be directed down the tracks towards the driver of the oncoming train.
While some signals used a lowered arm (lower-quadrant signal) to indicate that the signal could be passed, these were generally converted to the safer raised arm (upper-quadrant signal), which enabled the signal to fail safe in the case of a mechanical problem.

  Railway signal at AllExperts
A signal is a mechanical or electrical device that indicates to train drivers or engineers information about the state of the line ahead, and therefore whether he or she must stop or may start, or instructions on what speed the train may go.
Signals differ both in the manner in which they display aspects and in the manner in which they are mounted with respect to the track.
In the United States, signal indications at interlockings multiplied to indicate the speed at which the train was to traverse the interlocked trackage.

Railway cab signal transmitter - Patent 5263669
A transmitter for transmitting cab signal and track signal currents to a pair of rails includes the circuitry for mitigating runby currents which are not fully shunted by the rail vehicle.
The railway cab signal transmitter of claim 5 wherein said adjustment means is a resistance in series with said sensing coil and said relay further includes a second set of contacts to effectively decrease the resistance in series with said sensing coil when said detection means senses said approach of said railway vehicle.
Cab signaling is well-known and has been used for many years with a transmitter applying a signal to the rails, and a railway vehicle mounted receiver inductively sensing the coded cab signal current being fed to the track rails.

[IRFCA] Indian Railways FAQ: Signal Aspects and Indications - Principal Running Signals
If the distance between the signal at Caution and the signal at danger is less than the safe braking distance, the signal to the rear displaying Attention also serves to alert the driver that the train may have to be slowed to restricted speed when it reaches the next signal.
The Attention indication may correspondingly be displayed by the signal to the rear of the signal guarding the approach to a curve or a divergence or section with speed restrictions.
A home signal at Caution indicates that the train may have to stop on the line before leaving the block, or that the train has to slow down to a particular speed in order for the starter signal at the entrance to the next block to shift to Proceed.

British Railway Signal Boxes and ground Frames
Signal boxes were usually two-story buildings, the upper floor having large windows and containing the levers, instruments and what have you, the ground floor containing the complex mechanical interlocking mechanisms that prevented accidental setting of points and signals in dangerous configurations.
The practice of having the road normally open and the railway line blocked by the gates started in the latter part of the 19th century, when the electric telegraph was introduced enabling gate keepers to be advised of an approaching train.
Similarly where a siding from the railway crossed a road in to a factory the normal practice was to have a gate across the railway access and another across the entrance to the factory but the track between was often unprotected.

The familiar semaphore signal probably first arrived on the SandDJR to any great extent with the opening of the Bath Extension in 1874 and the rest of these notes deal with the subsequent period.
Signals arms originally were made from wood in a LQ pattern similar to that used by the LandSWR, but in SR days onwards metal UQ replacements appeared, usually with the distinctive horizontal corrugations which were provided to give greater strength to the sheet metal arm.
On distant signals the red aspect was superseded by yellow at the same that the arms were repainted yellow.

British Railway Signals - Mechanical and Fog signals
Railway signalling is part science and part art form, it has always relied heavily on dedicated staff and in the early years on the memory of train crews.
Signalling is not however a simple matter of stop or go and variations were introduced on the disc and bar and other systems to indicate such things as which route was being signalled.
The single banner signal is sketched from a photograph in a book on GWR signalling by Adrian Vaughn (for details of which see the bibliography) and the double banner is drawn from a signal still in use on the line from Altrincham to the junction with the main line at Stockport in Cheshire.
