Stations are often sited where a road crosses the railway: unless the crossing is a level crossing, the road and railway will be at different levels.
A railway station (or, in American English, train station / railroad station) is a facility, consisting usually of at least one building and other installations, at which passengers may board and alight from trains and/or goods may be loaded or unloaded.
Various forms of architecture have been used in the construction of railway stations, from those boasting grand and intricate almost baroque-style edifices, to more stark utilitarian or modern styles.

However, railway stations come in many different configurations - influenced by such factors as the geographical nature of the site, or the need to serve more than one route, which may or may not be connected, and the level of the tracks.
Schiphol Airport - the railway station is in a tunnel under the airport.
Sydney Wolli Creek station - two side platforms are below ground and serve the Airport and East Hills line, and one island platform is above ground, serving the Illawarra line which crosses at approximately right angles at this point.

 Furness and Midland Joint Railway, Article from "Model Railways". August 1975
A locomotive shed was provided by the Midland Railway to the east of Carnforth originally conceived as a galvanised iron structure for four engines; this developed into a large shed which remained in use until 1944, when the new LMS shed at Carnforth was fully operational.
The three station buildings were of similar design to a general Furness pattern using stone throughout, Borwick and Arkholme being identical with Melling a mirror image.
The desire for mutual exchange of traffic between the Furness Railway and the Midland Railway led the two companies to agree in 1862 to the construction of a joint line from Carnforth, at the eastern end of the Furness system, and Wennington on the "little" North Western line from Yorkshire to Morecambe.

 Embsay and Bolton Abbey Steam Railway - Photogalleries - Addingham station
The Midland Railway's typical station layouts usually involved single and double slips as well as three way points, and although a large amount of the track has been lifted by this time it is still possible to imagine the layout.
The yellow ring surrounds the station approach in the aerial photo, and the remnants of the walls pictured in this view are recorded below, working from the bottom of the road (to the left of the yellow ring, hidden behind the embankment) up to the entrance to the goods yard.
These two views (L+R) show the approximate line of the railway from the platforms (where the photo was taken from) across the road to the remaining stub of embankment, visible as a line in the centre of the picture - the retaining wall shown earlier.

 Model Railway Clubs
The clubroom has a semi permanent OO layout which is being progressively developed with the current focus being on platforms and buildings, with a grand curved viaduct carrying the mainline from the station towards two seperate tunnels.
The Club OO layout is called Soberton, a depiction of a Meon Valley Railway station had the line survived and flourished as was originally expected.
There are new OO and N gauge exhibition layouts in the making, with several baseboards built, lots of track laying and wiring going on with other sectional and stand alone layout projects in various stages of planning, construction and development.

The Elgin County Railway Museum(E.C.R.M.) is a registered, non-profit organization, and was established in 1988 to preserve railway heritage for the education and enjoyment of future generations.

 PB Network Issue 52 Integrated Transport Facility
PB was commissioned by Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council to examine alternative locations and layouts for a bus and rail interchange along the rail corridor between the rail's terminus at Merthyr Tydfil and the next station down the line, Pentrebach, a distance of approximately 1.6 km (1 mile).
There are, however, poor bus and pedestrian links between the bus station and the railway station that is 300 m (nearly one-quarter mile) away on the opposite side of the town centre.
It is centrally located in town near the shopping and administrative centres, thereby offering good accessibility for passengers travelling to and from the town centre by direct links onto the highway network.

 Plan of Carnforth Railway Station
In 1880 The London and North Western Railway (re)constructed the station, and built a new Southbound platform and buildings, on the main line.
Click here to download a plan of Carnforth Station, originally drawn after the building of the Furness platform, so probably 1945 or so.
Initially, a temporary station was built near to Warton Road, but this was only open for a short period before a permanent station was built close to Hagg Farm.
