Rain fade - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In satellite communications, rain fade refers to the absorption of a microwave Radio Frequency (RF) signal by rain or snow, and is especially prevalent in frequencies above 11 GHz.
From 5 to 20 percent of rain fade or satellite signal attenuation may also be caused by rain, snow or ice on the downlink antenna reflector, radome or feed horn.
Possible ways to overcome rain fade are site diversity, uplink power control, variable rate encoding, receiving antennas larger than the requested size for normal weather conditions, and super hydrophobic rain, snow and ice repellent coatings.

The rain fade margin is the amount of extra power Telesat adds to the signal strength to compensate for the possibility of rain attenuation.
Terrestrial microwave transmissions are more susceptible to the effects of rain attenuation because their signal paths are entirely in the troposphere, and the signal may pass through an entire rain cell.
The rain fade margin is a component of the link margin, and is a calculation of expected rain attenuation over one year.

 Rain Fade
Rain fade is one of the most common, and often most misunderstood, phenomena to affect satellite signals.
Rain outage will only occur during the heaviest rains (convective and stratiform are the most predominant types) with only a small portion of the transmission path experiencing attenuation.
Rain fade seems to correlate very closely with the volume of raindrops (expressed in cubic wavelengths) along the path of propagation.

Since rain only forms in the troposphere, which extends seven miles above the earth, and satellites in geostationary orbit are 35,800 km above the earth, a signal travelling through a rain cell will experience attenuation during only a small portion of its transmission path.
For C-band it is not as critical, in regards to Ku-band, however, the diameter of a rain drop is definitely detrimental to passage of Ku/Ka-band signals.
Rain fade does not cause noise to enter your system but it does prevent signal from being as strong as you may require.

Rain, snow and ice covering a satellite dish contribute to interruptions of TV reception.
Together with atmospheric precipitation, this loss of signal is commonly referred to as “rain fade”.
In heavy rain, a film of water can accumulate on the satellite dish resulting in poor video, loss of color and/or sound and in some cases the picture may drop out all together.

7 Years of ACTS Technology Verification Experiments
As the dominant cause for signal impairment, rain attenuation is a function of frequency, elevation angle, rain intensity, raindrop size distribution, and raindrop temperature.
Fades of 20 dB or larger were observed at least 0.1 percent of the time in subtropical rain zones and 0.01 percent of the time in a dry rain zone.

Current and past projects on systems analyses, designs and concepts | CRC
At 30/20 GHz, rain attenuation is severe and the provision of a simple power margin at the terminal and spacecraft is very inefficient to maintain a given link availability.
Statistical analysis of the data showed that rain fade event can be detected with a low false alarm probability and the fade depth estimated to within one (1) dB at worst.
Given the large rain attenuation at 30/20 GHz, there exists an optimum orbit location for a given coverage area where the required rain margin for maintaining a link availability is the most uniform.

Influence of time interval and filter bandwidth on measured rain fade slope
The rate of change of rain attenuation, or ‘fade slope,’ observed on a microwave link, is dependant on system parameters of the receiver.
This paper assesses its dependence on two data processing parameters: the time interval over which the fade slope is defined, and the low-pass filter bandwidth used to remove tropospheric scintillation.
In general, the fade slope always depends strongly on at least one of the two parameters.

Abstract: Rain attenuation countermeasure systems for geostationary satellite transmissions have been proposed that use a variety of methods.
This paper presents a technique which only requires a burst modem that is able to vary its bit and coding rate on a sub-burst basis coupled with a convolutional encoder/Viterbi decoder.
A complete method for predicting the attenuation at the receive time is described for two different DA-TDMA systems, using centralised and distributed control, respectively.
