Glitter is a soundtrack album by American singer-songwriter Mariah Carey, recorded for the film Glitter and released in the United States by Virgin Records on September 11, 2001 (see 2001 in music).
Carey has cited the September 11, 2001 attacks as one of the reasons the album failed.
The media was laughing at me and attacked me." (In fact, her album debuted at number seven on the U.S. Billboard 200 chart and fell rapidly after that, remaining on the chart for twelve weeks.

Rainbow (Mariah Carey album) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Rainbow is the ninth album and sixth studio album by American singer-songwriter Mariah Carey, released in the United States by Columbia Records on November 2, 1999 (see 1999 in music).
It is a collaboration-heavy album that found Carey co-operating with a wide range of producers and artists that dominated the music scene of the late 1990s.
While a commercial success, it was Carey's first studio album since Emotions (1991) not to reach number one in the U.S. and her lowest-selling up to that point; as of 2005, it had sold 2.9 million copies in the U.S. and ten million worldwide.

Carey's vocal trademark is her ability to hit high notes in the whistle register and she makes lavish use of melisma; her vocal swoops and trills are easily recognizable features of her sound.
Carey's second album, Emotions, was released in the fall of 1991, and its first single, the title track, was another US #1 hit giving Carey the distinction of being the only act ever to have had their first five singles go to #1 on the Hot 100 chart.
Mariah is the artist with the record for most consecutive years with a #1 single on the Billboard Hot 100; she is the only artist to have a single reach #1 on Billboard Hot 100 every year of the 1990s.

Mariah Carey had little contact with her father, except for sporadic visits on weekends but even those dwindled as the years went by; Patricia raised Mariah, often struggling with two or three jobs and continuing to move among different towns on Long Island, but tried to provide a spirited, loving household.
Carey had participated in theatre workshops as a child and began to study acting again in 1997 [41] with acting coach Sheila Gray, but it was not until 1999 that she made her big screen debut.
Carey is the only artist to have the debut singles from all her studio albums top the charts in the 1990s.

Mariah Carey - Album Reviews   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
Mariah Carey's #1's is as much a time capsule of '90s pop and R&B as a record of one woman's chart toppers: the disc chronicles a shift from the sweet, nearly '50s-style "Vision of Love" to more recent hip-hop-lite grooves featuring heavy input from Puffy Combs ("Honey"), Jermaine Dupri ("Sweetheart"), and O.D.B. ("Fantasy").
Carey continues to walk the line between streetwise hip-hop soul and adult-contemporary acceptability, with the former not surprisingly offering most of the disc's high points.
Music Box topped the Billboard album charts, yielding number-one singles like "Dreamlover" and "Hero." The titles, one a hollow Minnie Riperton knock-off and the other a stiff Barbra Streisand imitation, are tip-offs to Carey's reliance on untethered fantasy (she's the fantasizer in the lyrics and the fantasy object in the videos).

Mariah is clearly telling an old girlfriend of her boyfriend (could it have been Luis?) to stop pestering him and leave him to her.
Mariah sings clearly and the lyrics describe a flourishing romance, so this is more of a pop song than R&B. She sings some really lovely long notes with beautiful legato slides showing she's well in control of her voice and on top form.

Mariah Carey's lilting voice is so attractively airy that even when she's getting down and dirty on RAINBOW's numerous groove-heavy tunes, the overwhelming effect is one of a soothing aural massage.
On this album, Mariah proves to the world that she isn't just a pop balladeer by delivering one of the major turning points of Hip Hop and R&B and music in general.

Rainbow is the first Mariah Carey album that fans can admit they like, in public.
Fans for years have glimpsed that "Mariah Myth" brilliance under her live performances and unreleased tracks or b-sides like "Close My Eyes" and "Slipping Away", but whether it was lack of confidence or record label intervention, she has never indulged her audience with it.
The first single "Heartbreaker" doesn't give a lot of clues to the album's level, aside from its mature, fleshed out production that contrasts with her earlier efforts, which tend to teter on austere to bland.

Carey hasn't changed her style so radically as to partake in rapping; instead she's assisted by some talented guests, like Jay-Z, who enlivens the opener "Heartbreaker", and the "Heartbreaker" remix, where Mariah is flanked by Missy Elliot and Da Brat".
Elsewhere, Carey's duet with rising star Usher is labourious in it's delivery and lacks that effervescent spark present in the peppy pop anthems of Destiny's Child.
The album also marks a notable decrease in Mariah's reliance on ballads, with more than half of the album relying on upbeat RandB anthems: arguably because her ballads are no longer her forte.

Rainbow (Interlude) : 10/10 - The better interlude on Rainbow, this song is more of a continuation of Petals, but she's trying to find the end of the rainbow to find happiness.
The majority of Carey's fans think poorly of this album; it was rushed, it was a sad attempt to capture the young audience, it alienated her MOR fan base, etc, etc, etc. "Rainbow" is definitley a love-it-or-hate-it album, but I for one find its many criticisms to be unfair and highly enjoy it.
Carey's sad voice and the background music is enough to make your eyes tear as she sings at the very end: "And you coming back to me! Is against all odds, that's the chance I gotta taaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaake!" The song is absolute perfection in every way and I can't praise it enough.

The Harvard Crimson :: Arts :: Album Review: Rainbow by Mariah Carey
Listening to Rainbow, Mariah Carey's seventh album, it's clear that the best reason to rock this New Year's will be to celebrate the end of the Mariah decade.
The album strips that sound down to its purest form, cleverly obfuscating Mariah's predictably smarmy lyrics with sonorous mumblings, so that we can clasp Mariah's vocal range to our hearts without having to trouble with the language.
To the album's credit, Jay-Z, Usher, Snoop and Missy Elliott are featured, although Jay-Z seems to be wanting nave Annie-esque samples for counterpoint--not that Mariah sounds particularly world-weary when she sings about her "Heartbreaker" boyfriend.
