When Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six first arrived on the PC scene, it was a revelation for the gaming masses who were nursed on gorefest first-person shooters (FPS) like Doom and Quake.
Not only did Rainbow Six challenge all of the conventions typically associated with the genre, it also set new standards by interjecting a level of unforgiving realism and strategy that was then unheard of.
Rainbow Six requires extreme amounts of strategic studying and planning during the preliminary phase of each mission in order to simultaneously direct multiple teams to complete various objectives.

Not to be confused with the previously released PC edition Rainbow Six 3: Raven Shield, the Xbox edition of Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six 3 has been significantly reworked into a game that not only feels almost nothing like the previous games in the series, but is stylishly distinct from any other first-person shooter.
All the typical Rainbow Six locales—airports, high rises, warehouses, etc.—are present, with only the occasional level, such as the truly superlative Alcatraz level, really evoking a sense of wonder.
Also available to solitary players is a "terrorist hunt" mode in which maps unlocked in the campaign can be traversed without the scripted events (terrorists are randomly scattered throughout the level) and without the additions of disarming bombs and/or rescuing hostages.

This book is part of the Jack Ryan series - in a round about manner, in so much as it focuses on John Clark, Ryan's shadow.
The task force, named Rainbow, is peopled with hard fighting, rock-steady, dedicated men who are willing to die for the 'cause' if they must - but given the option, they'd much rather see the bad guys lined up in body bags, a scene repeated on a regular basis.
Due to the ongoing focus on the threat of terrorism, Rainbow Six will hold a particular relevance for readers that it may not have had when it was first published in 1998.
