The Rainbow Serpent (Snake) is an important part of the beliefs and culture of the people of western Arnhem Land.
Today the Rainbow Serpent is associated with ceremonies about fertility and abundance, as well as the organisation of the community and the keeping of peace.
Two types of Rainbow Serpents consistently turn up in their oral history, mythology, ceremonies and painted art: Yingarna, the female Rainbow Serpent, is the mother, the original creator being; and the male Rainbow Serpent, Ngalyod, is the transformer of the land.

In "The Serpent and the Rainbow" Wes Craven once again shows us that he knows how to make horror really scary; all the horror and gore is fine, but you must remember to make the characters human and real.
"The Serpent and The Rainbow" just isn't very stimulating at all and the result is a largely boring movie with laughable scenes that are supposed to be scary or shocking.
"The Serpent and The Rainbow" is border-line to almost pure rubbish material as far as its merits as a horror movie are concerned.

Classic-Horror Review of The Serpent and the Rainbow (1988)
A creepy travelogue of exaggerated dark sides of other cultures, Wes Craven 's The Serpent and the Rainbow is a fine horror film with the scope of Indiana Jones and the attitude of Freddy Krueger.
So, the bulk of The Serpent and the Rainbow takes place in Duvalier-ridden Haiti (which fuels some unnecessary political critique-part of the reason I docked this flick a half point), as Allen hooks up with a pulchritudinous doctor and searches the seedy, evil underbelly of voodoo culture for the key to zombification.
The Serpent and the Rainbow bears more than a passing stylistic similarity to Alan Parker's film Angel Heart (1987), although it is not quite as good as Parker's film.

His book about his experience, "The Serpent and the Rainbow," was more an excursion into the folklore of the region than a horror tale, but leave it to Craven to change that.

The story, based upon a nonfiction book by Wade Davis, a professor who, much like the film's hero, ventured deep into the heart of voodoo country, is an uneven combination of old-style voodoo elements (the suspicious locals, the grim rituals, etc.) and the razzle-dazzle of modern special effects wizardry.
The Serpent and the Rainbow does boast a number of very interesting visuals, but in the meantime, it plays out like an old man taking a nap: several slow periods interrupted by loud, brief reminders to assure the audience that it's still alive.
Wes Craven's The Serpent and the Rainbow is as equally inquisitive about the Caribbean theology, but its director is too concerned with how the next set of jungle animals springing to life will to care about a silly thing like that.

There's a moment in director Wes Craven's "The Serpent and the Rainbow" that literally hurts to watch.
Like "Nightmare," "Serpent" is filled with hallucinatory nightmares that haunt the central character.
Handsomely shot, engagingly acted (Mokae is extremely vile as the crooked police chief), and genuinely chilling, "The Serpent and the Rainbow" comes alive on DVD with a beautiful transfer and an expressive soundtrack.

Apart from moments of conventional schlock (the ending included), "Serpent" twists with expertly drawn menace.
The editing's snappy, the images visceral, and Craven's Haiti is a craze of blood ceremonies and political rioting -- it's set during the fall of "Baby Doc" Duvalier.
But in "Serpent" his characters are older (possibly because he has killed off all the teen-agers in previous movies) and he seems wiser and more story-conscious -- but thankfully still full of the same surprises.
