Rainer Maria - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Rainer Maria were an indie rock band originally from Madison, Wisconsin, later residing in Brooklyn, New York.
Named after the German-language poet Rainer Maria Rilke, they formed in the late summer of 1995 and have released five full length albums, a live DVD, and numerous live recordings and EPs.
The gender ambiguity of the name Rainer Maria parallels this, and is one of the reasons it was considered as the band's name.

For poetry lovers and students of literature and literary criticism, Robert Bly, the National Book Award-winning poet, brings his prowess as a translator and critic to bear on the work of one of the major German poets of the century.
Bly states that he wants to be true to the sound of the poems, but his translations are quite matter-of-fact and lose a lot of the lyrical qualities of the German original.
The "shshsh" sound keeps the many "s" and "sch" sounds you can hear when you read the first stanza (in German) aloud, and it is just as evocative of the sound of wind in a tree as the German original.

It should come as no surprise that Rene Maria Rilke was born in the melancholic Prague of Czechoslovakia on December 4, 1875.
By now he had changed his ambiguously feminized name Rene to Rainer as a sign of his independence and break with his mother.
Although he had already begun to write poetry and gained a bit of notoriety, his poetry was still considered derivative of the Symbolist influences he inherited from Rimbaud, Mallarme, and Verlaine of France, and George, to a lesser extent, of Germany.
