  Rainier Brewing Company - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Rainier Brewing Company was a Seattle, Washington company that brewed Rainier Beer, a very popular brand in the Pacific Northwest.
Although beer is no longer brewed there, the brewery itself is still a fixture in the south end of town, adjacent to I-5 just north of the West Seattle Freeway.
Rainier beer is still made but is no longer brewed in Washington state.

After the end of Prohibition, Rainier Beer was acquired by Fritz Sick and his son Emil, who enlarged the original Georgetown plant near S Spokane Street and Airport Way S, and later installed a giant red "R" neon sign (now in the collection of the Museum of History and Industry) that became a local landmark.
Rainier and its brewery were purchased in 1977 and passed through several corporate hands until 1999, when Stroh's abandoned the beer business.
The beer it was famous for was named Rainier Beer, and it was quaffed all over the West and as far as Alaska.

Rainier beer was originally a product of the old Seattle Brewing and Malting Company in Georgetown, who brewed the beer until the state of Washington went dry in 1916 (four years before a consitutional amendment made the whole country dry).
As Emil Sick's Rainier Brewery prospered in the post-Prohibition 1930s, a rumor began to circulate among angry Tacoma citizens that Sick had paid off a Washington committee (with free beer) to influence them into designating Mount Rainier as the official name of the nearby majestic 14,000-ft peak over the locally favored choice of Mount Tacoma.
Mount Rainier was so designated in 1792 by British Captain George Vancouver, who named it after a friend, Rear Admiral Peter Rainier, and published that designation in his journal six years later.

Police in New Brunswick discovered 200 cans of stolen Moosehead beer at a marijuana growing operation in the forest near Doaktown, N.B. A few of the cans, from a shipment bound for Mexico that was stolen in August, had been ripped open by a bear.
The beer cans were identified as having belonged to a load of 54,000 cans that disappeared from a Moosehead delivery truck more than two months ago.
The stolen beer has been turning up in various places around New Brunswick since the transport truck was discovered abandoned in Grand Falls, N.B. Wade Haines of Fredericton, the driver of the truck, has been charged with theft over $5,000 and is awaiting trial.

I have fond memories of both the tour and the beer (this was long before my foray into the craft beer world), but it was the ancient building itself, with history behind every nook and cranny, that really caught my fancy.
But again, the beer was of secondary enjoyment; the thick old walls of the brewery, full of past palatial glories, were the highlight.
