Thunder Bay District is a district and census division in Northwestern Ontario in the Canadian province of Ontario.
Thunder Bay District was created in 1871 by provincial statute from the western half of Algoma District.
Its northern and western boundaries were uncertain until Ontario's right to Northwestern Ontario was determined by the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council.

Construction of a rail bridge at Rainy River in 1902 coincided with completion of the railway to Lake Superior.
An important supply depot for expeditions traveling to the West and for early settlers in the district, Fort Frances became a Hudson’s Bay Company store in 1898 and was destroyed by fire in 1903.
During the next twenty years, in attempting to reach this sea, he personally explored much of what is now northwestern Ontario, southern Manitoba and North Dakota, and directed the exploration of an even larger area.

Currently, the Grey Fox is thought to be present in two regions within Canada: the Rainy River District of Ontario (west of Lake Superior) into southeastern Manitoba, and from southeastern Ontario (Windsor) to southwestern Quebec (Sherbrooke).
Breeding has only been confirmed in the second of these two regions; foxes observed in the former region may be individuals that have come across the border with the United States and are not breeding in Canada.
They make their dens in many different kinds of substrate (rock outcrops, hollow trees, underground burrows dug by other animals, or piles of brush), but the dens are usually located in an area of dense brush, fairly close to a water source.

Monday, May 27, 2002 – WOLFVILLE: The Wolfville and Kings County Safe Communities Coalition became the first community in the Maritime Provinces to be officially designated as a "Safe Community" by the Safe Communities Foundation of Canada.
The designation was presented to Coordinator Lyle Goldberg at the 11th International Conference on Safe Communities held in the Rainy River District of Northwestern Ontario from May 7th to 9th.
The Coalition's mission is "to make Wolfville and surrounding communities in Kings County the safest places in Canada to live, learn, work and play." Currently the Coalition is addressing four issues: workplace safety, home safety, seniors' falls prevention, and infant/child car seat safety (under the auspices of the Snap, Buckle and Drive Program).
