 Frequently Asked Questions about RAISE
RAISE is a result of 20 years of research and experience in systematic software development using the paradigm of "stepwise refinement" ([Dij76],[Wir71],[Jon86]).
The RAISE tools form a collection of tools for editing and manipulating a variety of entities that are relevant during a development process: modules, relations between modules, theories, justifications and hints.
RAISE potentially reduces the effort devoted to testing software because programs already written can be re-used, and because some of the development process might be shown correct in a formal sense using the RAISE justification tools.

Boston.com / News / Boston Globe / Opinion / Op-ed / Congress helps itself to another pay raise
Once upon a time, senators and representatives knew that before they could raise their salary, they had to hold hearings and take a vote.
Not surprisingly, Congress tended to go long stretches between pay raises, and lawmakers knew better than to hike their pay during a recession.
The only way not to get the raise is to pass an amendment blocking it, and parliamentary hurdles make that difficult to accomplish.

Russian-American Initiative on Shelf-Land Environments in the Arctic (RAISE)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
Program Overview: RAISE is a multi-disciplinary research initiative that has the objective of integrating scientific understanding of global change in the Arctic at the land-sea boundary over prehistoric, historic, and current time frames.
One of the key challenges throughout the history of the RAISE project, and in a larger sense for all U.S. and Russian researchers wishing to work together, have been governmental, logistical, and administrative barriers to undertaking joint field research in the Arctic.
The RAISE project office sponsored a workshop to bring together U.S. and Russian scientists as well as bi-national agency and Russian Academy personnel in June 2005 to articulate and describe those challenges, possible solutions, as well as to seek higher-level support in both the United States and Russia for bilateral research on arctic environmental change.

 CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Miracle
This is clearly expressed by Christ in the raising of Lazarus (John, xi), and the Evangelist says that Jesus, in working His first miracle at Cana, "manifested his glory" (John, ii, 11).
He came to give life to men, and this teaching is emphasized by raising the dead to life, especially in the case of Lazarus and His own Resurrection.
Finally, the prophetic element of the fortunes of the individual and of the Church is shown in the miracles of stilling the tempest, of Christ on the waters, of the draught of fishes, of the didrachma and the barren fig tree.

Under a 1989 law, congressional pay raises, determined by a complicated formula that includes a measure of private industry employment costs, go into effect automatically unless lawmakers vote to block it.
Showdowns over pay raises traditionally take place during debate on the annual spending bill for the Treasury Department and related agencies, but a 258-156 procedural vote at the opening of that debate effectively prevented lawmakers from offering an amendment to kill the raise.
The 3.3% pay raise, which would go into effect in January, would also apply to more than 1,000 top executive branch officials, including the vice president, and members of the congressional leadership.

Both the House and Senate, ignoring a White House recommendation that civilian pay raises be held down next year, have decided on 4.1 percent raises for almost all federal workers.
The 4.1 percent raise for military personnel and more than 1 million civilian workers more than doubles the 2 percent recommended by President Bush, who cited the costs of the war on terrorism last month in seeking a lower rate.
It also said the administration was "extremely disappointed" that the bill does not fund Bush's request for a $500 million fund to target pay raises to employees demonstrating high performance.
