  Raise (poker)
To raise in poker is to make the amount of one's bet greater than the amount of the immediately preceding bet, forcing all subsequent players to Call the new amount.
A universal rule in American casinos, and common in home games as well, is that any raise must at least equal the amount of the previous raise.
This rule is often overridden by Table stakes rules, so that a player may in fact raise a $5 bet by $2 if that $2 is his entire remaining stake.

This doesn’t mean raising before the flop is incorrect in a no fold-em game; rather, a raise should be made only when you are looking to play a bigger pot against several opponents.
Raising in spots that are likely to produce a short field is a mistake with this sort of hand, due to its lack of high-hand potential.
Additionally, not all raises are created equal—there is a big difference in the hand strength of a solid player raising in early position and that of a loose, reckless player raising on the button.

Some games treat the big blind as a "raise" of the small blind for the purpose of calculating the maximum raise—the small blind is allowed to call the big blind, and then make a pot sized raise of twice the big blind, for a total bet of three times the big blind.

The idea of raising the same amount each hand is to try to prevent a mistake many beginners make, they telegraph their hand by the size of their raise.
Now I raise 3-5x the BB based on the situation (as long as you don't vary your bets by the cards you are holding you will not be telegraphing your hand).
Although is is true the strict "raise or fold" rule is for beginners, the two main purposes of a raise is to build the pot and scare off players who might limp and either hit a monster on the flop or outdraw you.

In tournament poker the question often arises, "What is a standard raise?" Conventional wisdom suggests as standard a raise of three times the big blind or, if there are antes involved, the exact sum of the antes and blinds.
The standard raise is not always "the right tool for the right job." Further to this, by showing some flexibility in your opening moves (and by randomizing that flexibility) you can make your opponents uncertain about your intent.
