Raise The Titanic - Music from the Movies
Raise The Titanic has consistently been cited by film music enthusiasts as one of the most popular scores deserving a commercial soundtrack release.
Barry's main theme, for the ship itself ('Prelude', 'Raise the Titanic', 'End Titles'), is a proud and noble statement, underlining the historic achievement of the ships construction.
A secondary theme ('All That's Left') evokes the people of Titanic with a nostalgic hue and is particularly moving in 'Memories of Titanic', where the theme is carried by saxophone over a harrowing waltz-like piano motif, before moving into a elegiac trumpet solo.

I thought the visual effects of the Titanic breaking the surface were surprisingly good, especially for the pre-CGI era.
The fact that the real Titanic, discovered five years after this film's release, was revealed to be broken in two or three sections and virtually impossible to salvage, ruins the film for some, and I understand that.
As depicted later in Titanic, the ship broke in two as it sank; also, the stern section suffered major structural damage, perhaps due to implosion from water pressure.

While Raise the Titanic was not exactly a box office smash, the sweeping score that Barry wrote for it was so lyrical and thematic that film music fans were literally begging for a release.
Based on the novel of the same name, Raise the Titanic was certainly a page-turner.
Today, however, Raise the Titanic is a very dated film - after all, the book and subsequent movie were created in a time where the Titanic still hadn't been found - and was assumed to be in one piece, which we know to be false.

For some reason John Barry's score for Raise the Titanic - the 1980 film starring Anne Archer, Alec Guinnes, David Selby among others - never got an official release.
Basically Raise the Titanic is fifty minutes of slow and emotional writing for strings, tons of low brass chords and melodic horn phrases.
There are a wealth of other themes as well, such as the beautiful "requiem for the lost", to quote the liner notes.

If Raise the Titanic isn't the most requested CD release in the history of the world, I don't know what is. Evidently enough people actually saw the film to hear the music to request the score.
I think it's the bit that everyone remembers (although I have to admit that it wasn't nearly as great as I'd thought it would be and don't think it quite compares to many of Barry's classic main themes).
I must admit that there isn't a great deal of variety in the score, much of it is low and sonourous, probably accompanying endless underwater scenes of little submarines floating about looking at dingy special effects.
