BookPage Nonfiction Review: Raised on Radio
Nachman was, as his title says, raised on radio -- he caught the last few years of its golden age, from the mid-1940s to the very early '50s -- and the glory of his book is that, in the preceding 500 pages, he captures what a marvelous, diverse voice it was.
Radio also declined because, in response to television's deluge, it began desperately grasping at straws that hadn't a hope of saving it, such as game-and-giveaway shows.
Reading and radio share one invaluable effect to which passive television is largely immune: the active engagement of their audiences.

Raised on Radio is a gem, not because my friend wrote it, but because its title is truthful, thus the stories inside the book are truthful.
For those who were not "raised on radio" (or, more likely, grew up in the later decades of disc jockeys and "talk"), the book provides an introduction to the basics of Old Time Radio.
All in all, "Raised on Radio" is a good introduction for younger readers (born after 1960, shall we say) to the basics of Old Time Radio, a good place to get one's bearings before tackling more specialized books and, of course, listening to the programs themselves.

With tremendous clarity and analytical sophistication, she shows that far from 'duped consumers,' radio listeners were savvy, sassy, and effective activists who talked back plenty to commercial radio.
Focusing on the major mass medium of the 1930s and 1940s, the radio, Newman brilliantly tracks the dialectical process through which audience attention became a commodity that broadcasters set out to sell to sponsors and then how listeners, often women, turned their new-found importance to their own ends as assertive consumers.
Radio Active tells the story of how radio listeners at the American mid-century were active in their listening practices.

By any rational measure, Bob and Ray should have been washed up along with the rest of radio in the 1950s, but they hung on until Ray's death in 1990, ending a partnership of almost half a century.
In various formats, and rarely sponsored, the pair were at once anachronistic and contemporary, finding new ways to mock a medium whose original satirical targets had long since surrendered or died and gone to radio heaven.
Robert Brackett Elliott and Raymond Walter Goulding were true radio offspring whose entire career consisted of mocking radio in all of its vast, unending inanities and banalities.
