  Raising Helen
Raising Helen may be about a young single woman taking in sister's children, but as its title implies, it is more about the Helen character coming to grips with a new outlook on life and become mature and responsible in a short amount of time.
Helen Harris (Kate Hudson, Le Divorce, Alex and Emma) works for a posh modeling agency, and gets to wear expensive, flashy clothes, go to hip clubs and restaurants, and live a life that is pretty fun.
Raising Helen is still too predictable of a film to do it any good, but at least the script Hudson a little more opportunity than her endeavors.

 Raising Helen (2004): Reviews
Helen Harris's carefree lifestyle comes to a screeching halt when she learns that she is now responsible for her sister's three children.
What Raising Helen doesn't offer is a competent (never mind compelling) performance from Hudson, who is as cute as lace pants and has approximately as much acting skill.
Raising Helen is the kind of movie you watch on a plane while muttering “utter crap” under your breath -- and then burst into tears.

Raising Helen Movie Review at Hollywood Video   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-14)
Raising Helen is a fairytale, not unlike director Garry Marshall's other live-action fairy tales, Pretty Woman, The Runaway Bride, and The Princess Diaries.
Raising Helen is packed with clichés—from the fashion world to apartment hunting in NYC to any number of problems involving teenagers—but none of them feels layered too thickly, and the movie itself is paced briskly enough that if one gag makes you roll your eyes, it's over quickly enough.
The movie pays lip service to what's obvious: Helen is too self-centered to raise children, but then it goes and does the gushy Hollywood thing anyway, effectively giving the audience a message that having a husband and raising kids is more rewarding than the working life.

Helen, a young woman who hasn't completely grown up herself, doesn't know the first thing about raising kids, but she accepts out of duty.
Helen's journey to becoming a parent and falling in love with her nieces and nephew—the core premise—lacks the depth and details required to get a sense of her burgeoning relationship with them.
With "Raising Helen," director Garry Marshall has concocted one of his very worst films, to date, a motion picture that tries so hard to win viewers over with its cuteness that it comes off feeling like it hasn't tried at all.

Helen (Hudson, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days) is an adorable hipster whose swift rise up the fashion industry ladder gets sideswiped when she finds herself responsible for raising three children, left in her care by the untimely death of one of her sisters.
In "Raising Helen" the screenplay tosses obstacles in front of Helen and her orphaned nephew and nieces, but then the screenplay also provides a deux ex machina to resolve the conflict in the next scene.
Helen suddenly needs someone to sit with the two younger kids while the younger one has gone from the Prom to a hotel with a "bad boy" - neighbor Nilma is *always* available, not only to take care of the kids, but also to brandish a baseball bat to whack bad boys.

Raising Helen is repellent in the way of roadside carrion: it just sort of lies there stinking, making it hard to find the energy to attack it.
Helen (Hudson) isn't an advertising executive or a magazine editor, making Raising Helen distinct for its ability to discern the mid-point between the two most popular rom-com professions--no, Helen is a modeling agency rep, and one of the three sisters from Hanging Up, the young and sassy one.
Consider that Raising Helen is a film directed by a man from a screenplay written by two men, aimed solely at an imaginary demographic of women so emotionally stunted and silly that inert compost like this would please them.

 Raising Helen - Movie Review
Raising Helen is all about Hudson, who stars in the title role, when it should focus on other topics — the ties of family, coping with tragedy, and starting your life from scratch.
Before her life-altering arrangement and her rear end expands, Helen is in what Jack Nicholson’s character in Something’s Gotta Give would call her “magic time” — early 20s, the pertness of youth on her side, and the world at her Charles Davids.
Raising Helen feels wrong from the start, taking mature subjects and spinning them into candy-coated scenarios for a young audience that doesn’t know any better.

Plus, Helen's older sister Jenny (Joan Cusack) is miffed that she wasn't asked to serve as guardian of the kids, and she usually doesn't make Helen feel very good about herself.
