Finnish group Raisio is to build a new oatmeal plant in Russia, in a move designed to strengthen its position in the nation’s fast expanding food production market.
Raisio said it hopes the new facility, which is due to be completed by next year, will allow it to increase its presence in the local market.
According to Raisio's vice president of business development Jukka Kaitaranta, most of the oatmeal production from the new plant will target the retail market in Russia and Ukraine.

Raisio said that it planned to continue production of some of the existing product lines at the dairy group, which is based in Istra, some 60km from Moscow, but that the main reason for the purchase was to boost sales of its margarine products.
Raisio’s margarine exports to Russia have collapsed in recent years, the company said, due not only to import duties of 15 per cent designed to protect local producers but also to increased competition from these local players who operate on a much lower cost base.
With this base on which to build, Raisio said it would invest €2 million in refitting the dairy company to produce margarine as well, with production due to begin by the end of the year.
