He let us know that usually it is very silent in Rajah Sikatuna, and we were very unlucky (next day he called his boss and managed to place us in one room, so we didn't have to leave the park as it first seemed).
Rajah Sikatuna NP, Bohol, 2 was heard in the middle of jungle.
An owl seen in bad light in the edge of 2nd clearing was probably this species.

The voices of sunia and senegalensis differ from that of O. scops and B. King recommends species status for both.
Otus guatemalae emerged as the sister taxon of a group that includes choliba, atricapillus, usta, sanctaecatarinae and hoyi; thus, a superspecies guatemalae would include these species.
There are other opinions about the relationships among these taxa and the present arrangement is used until a review of the New World species of Otus is presented by one of the owl specialists.

 Birdwatching Trip Report from Sumatra
Further along the track we spotlighted a calling Sunda Frogmouth (albeit briefly) and were investigated by a superb Reddish Scops Owl.
We even had time to fit in a fine Brown Hawk Owl that evening before bringing the Way Kambas nightbirding to a grand finale with a cute Gould's Frogmouth on our last morning.
The rest of our nightbirding was less successful and although we heard and glimpsed Rajah's Scops Owl on a number of occasions, we never achieved the views we hoped for.

Heard at several spots in south Luzon but I saw but one male in Rajah Sikatuna NP (Bohol) where it "acted like a shy curassow high in canopy and was very skittish." Endemic race philippensis.
My notes say: "The owl is quite a large scops-owl with yellow eyes and ear tufts.
This gorgeous pitta was seen on two days when I was alone in Rajah Sikatuna NP (Bohol) and I saw others near Balsahan (Palawan); in PICOP forest (Mindinao; tapedin by King); and in Quezon NP (Luzon).

Other night birds that are resident along the first stretch of the main trail are Mountain Scops-Owl, Barred Eagle-Owl and Rajah Scops-Owl.
Salvadori's Nightjar is sometimes recorded in the forest edge at the start of the trail.
Gunung Kerinci: A pair near the entrance to the forest was very vocal and territorial; heard on 19-Jun and 22-Jun. Despite considerable effort only glimpses were obtained of the birds flying between trees in the lower canopy.

With its eyes situated centrally on the face, its bill sticking out one end and an ear tuft the other, it is sometimes hard to work out which way it's facing!!
We had stunning views of a Gould's Frogmouth too and were delighted to track down a superb Reddish Scops Owl which eventually showed to all in broad daylight!
Last mention must go to the magical Bay Owl which posed for us for a full five minutes, not knowing whether to fly away or peer at me as I whistled to him!
