Rajauri: This town with a normal population of about six thousand which had swelled to about 11 thousand at the time of its fall because of the arrival of Hindus from the surrounding villages, lies in the interior of Jammu Province on the old Mughal road to Kashmir.
Their task would have become impossible but for the daring landings of the I.A.F. Dakotas on an improvised air strip in the town, which lay within firing range of the enemy who commanded the surrounding hills.
The story of the war in the Jammu sector is thus a continuous tragedy occassionally relieved by episodes of glory provided by the heroes of Kotli, or the defenders of Poonch.

 DAWN - Letters; July 15, 2003
On this premise Mr Khawaja goes further to suggest sub-dividing the Hindu and Buddhist dominated areas of Jammu and Ladakh by carving out of these the predominantly Muslim districts/tehsils of Poonch, Doda and Rajauri of Jammu and Kargil and Drass of the Ladakh area.
This sort of hatchet work is a continuation and replication of the historic follies and political ineptitude applied to the subcontinent which engendered communal hatred, mass uprooting, massacre and geographical and demographic distortions.
Going by the proposition of Mr Khawaja, if Poonch, Doda, Rajauri, Kargil and Drass, being Muslims areas, opt for an independent Muslim Kashmir, then what status are we supposed to give to the predominantly Hindu districts/tehsils (like Mithi, for example) of rural Sindh and Tharparkar?

Revisiting the 1965 Indo-Pak war. Strategic viewpoint - Military Photos
In terms of territory, in Punjab and Kashmir, India had more at the end of those 22 fateful days (the title of late D.R. Mankekar’s book on the 1965 war).
If you consider the key theatre of Kashmir, while the Pakistanis had gains in the Chhamb-Jaurian, in Kargil, Rajauri and, most importantly, in the Uri sectors, India had nibbled on much greater chunks of crucial territory, including the Haji Pir Pass.
In Punjab, the Pakistanis had Khemkaran—barely an hour’s drive from Amritsar—and some territory around it, and the Hussainiwala enclave across the Satluj, but India had a lot more in the Lahore and Sialkot sectors.
