Near the start of the track proper is a huge chain "sculpture", symbolising the Maori explanation of Stewart Island as the anchor to the canoe of South Island.
The track roughly follows the coast, with a couple of swing bridges to cross rivers, but for much of it there are no views of the ocean.
We backtracked a little to the junction where the Rakiura Track leaves the coast and crosses the peninsula to North Arm.

These tracks are very popular with overseas visitors, partly due to their heavy promotion by the Department of Conservation and tourism operators.
Tracks are designated as Great Walks for a specified period each year which varies from track to track.
This pass is specific to the track you are walking and allows a specified number of nights camping or staying in huts (you can of course purchase a combination of hut and tent nights).

Kings Rock: This is a side track off the main Picnic Point track, (medium fitness required), it goes through forest, follows a poled route across farm land, and along the coast to Kings Rock which is an eroded pillar.
During winter and spring the alpine section of the track may be impassable because of snow and ice.
The Routeburn Track is a 32 km, two to three day, moderate tramping track which links Mount Aspiring and Fiordland National Park via the Harris Saddle (1277m).

At Lee Bay, a large stylised chain marked both the entrance to the Rakiura National Park and the anchor chain of Maui's canoe in Maori legend.
Eventually, the track descended to Maori Beach where a stream of tidal water prevents passing at high tides.
They were planning on doing the North West Circuit Track, though my feeling was that they might struggle as the Czech girl had overtaken and commented that she thought they were struggling.

While Rakiura also refers to the embarrassment of Te Rakitamau, it is equally descriptive of the island's spectacular sunsets and its night-time displays of Aurora Australis, the Southern Lights.

After taking 30 minutes or so to reach the track junction again, we realised that the full cold weather regalia we were outfitted in was more than a little excessive.
The sun was shining, and whilst the heat wasn't exactly penetrating the thick bush, the evaporating water made the atmosphere stiflingly humid.
Eventually, we reached the point where the North West Circuit Track from Freshwater Inlet rejoins the Rakiura Track (after 8 days and 100km travel from Port William).

Be warned this track has lots of benched sections, we found this very tiring on the hilly middle section through the bush...like going up and down stairs.
A very informative and interesting walkabout on the island, where all predators have been exterminated so there is plenty of birdlife to see.
Tower viewpoint at highest point of track (about 300') provided views right across the island.

We expected the walk to be fairly easy -- after all, the highest elevation we would be getting to was 150m, as opposed to the 305m we climbed on the second day of the Rakiura track, or the bleeding 1850m of the Tongariro Crossing.
We were glad we did the Rakiura Track first, so we didn't expect it to be easy, as we surely would have after the Abel Tasman.
Two places along the track were tidal flats that had to be crossed fairly close to low tide.
