Raleigh was founded in 1888 when Sir Frank Bowden bought an interest in a small bicycle company on Raleigh Street in Nottingham, England.
I believe the world wide appeal of the Raleigh Chopper is mainly because, there had never been anything like a Chopper in the cycle world before, and what with the whole theme of the 70's,  plus the back up of the name Raleigh, (Which is known world wide) it had to work.
There could never be a Raleigh Chopper as we all know it, as it would not get through today's safety rules, and the cost of production would be high, as most of the parts would be purely for that one bike.

The Raleigh Chopper was a children's bicycle manufactured and marketed in the 1970s by the Raleigh Company of Nottingham, England.
Raleigh themselves built a copy of the chopper-like Schwinn Stingray they called the Rodeo, which was launched in the US in 1966.

Enter Raleigh who came in with their R.S.W. 16 that used 16 x 2 all white Dunlop tires that were balloonish and that (was supposed to) compensated for Raleigh's lack of a Moulton like suspension unit.
Raleigh had the non folding and then a folding version of the R.S.W. Colors were Bronze- Green, flamboyant (candy) Carmine Red.
Raleigh made the Chopper in a Mk 1 and a Mk 2 ans then just very recently came out with a new version the MK 3.

 60s/70s Chopper Bicycles
Last year I aquired two chopper style bikes, one was 1969 mark 1 Raleigh Chopper, which is complete and straight with all of the original parts.
I intend to restore the Raleigh it's new condition over the summer, as there seems to be plenty of people around selling the parts that I require.
This bike is styled very similar to the Raleigh but it has a five speed shifter mounted on the frame and a twin tubed centrebar rather than a single one.
