 Primal Fear CD Reviews
Ralf Scheepers, who gained notoriety during his stint in Gamma Ray, continues the power metal cause by fronting Primal Fear with his comrade in arms Mat Sinner (of Sinner fame).
Scheepers was once considered for the vocalist spot in Judas Priest after Rob Halford's departure, but he almost quit the music biz after learning he wasn't chosen to replace Halford.
Primal Fear is Ralf Scheepers on vocals, Tom Naumann and Stefan Leibing on guitars, Mat Sinner on bass and background vocals, and Klaus Sperling on drums and background vocals.

 Gamma Ray
At first, it featured Ralf Scheepers on vocals, but in 1995, after releasing three albums, "Heading For Tomorrow" (1990), "Sigh No More" (1991), and ground-breaking "Insanity And Genius" (1993), Gamma Ray figured it was too far of a drive for Scheepers to be a permanent frontman (he lived about 5 hours away).
Scheepers left, to start his own Primal Fear (which can be considered a spin-off of a spin-off of Helloween).
GR re-recorded all songs from Ralf Scheeper's period with Kai on vocals.

 Encyclopedia: Gamma Ray (band)
Eventually, Hansen decided to form his own project, with long-time friend Ralf Scheepers (vocals), Uwe Wessel (bass) and Mathias Burchard (drums).
And then a big change: as plans for the band's fourth album came along, Hansen and Schlächter were annoyed by the fact that Scheepers lived such a far way away from Hamburg.
Since Scheepers had auditioned for the job as vocalist for Judas Priest, and his chances at getting the spot were considered pretty good, Hansen asked him if he really felt that staying with Gamma Ray was the right thing to do.

When Gamma Ray started work on their fourth studio album, "Land Of The Free" Ralf was currently living a long way away from Hamburg, where the Hansen Studio is located.
This was somewhat annoying for the rest of the band, since Ralf could only come to Hamburg on weekends, since he still had a daytime job.
Therefore Ralf, Kai and Dirk Schlächter decided that it was for the bands own good if Ralf would leave Gamma Ray.

There are some classic metal guitar riffs here ("Scared Illusion") and Scheepers is a phenomenal singer with awesome range- although he is prone to sounding emotionless at times, and there are some excellent songs ("Visions of Fate"), but it appears that Primal Fear formula is becoming more bland that ever.

Dogged with the comparison to Rob Halford, as much for his vocal style, as choice of wardrobe, Scheepers' audition for the Judas Priest vacancy is well documented.

OK, for the fourth time the band around Ralf Scheepers is at the start and "the German answer to JUDAS PRIEST", as they are called here and there, hasn't really changed.
It's still forceful Power Metal, without frills, borne by Scheepers' original voice, which at times, of course, reminds a bit of early GAMMA RAY.
Forceful double-bass and an overall very good drum-performance go along with powerful and catchy riffs, which still crack like ka-boom and to lose many words about Ralf Scheepers' vocals would be a waste of time, he is renowned to be one of the best shouters of this sub-genre and anno 2002 nothing has changed.
