Ralph's Revolt should be required reading for anyone who considers themselves a "progressive" and who plans to vote in the upcoming election, whether or not they are considering voting for Ralph Nader.
Bates provides one of the best critiques of the "safe states" strategy and shows just how few voters actually need to be concerned that their vote for a third party candidate will go towards "helping to elect" George W. Bush.
Bates has produced one of the most important pieces of writing pertaining to the 2004 election, and while it may be too late to craft a serious left alternative this election, his arguments will be helpful in considering what to do in the 2008 election.

But as Bates points out, these horrors aren’t simply the result of a particularly devilish president, but are the product of the circumstances that Bush found himself in--and were made possible by the very party that is supposed to act as an opposition.
Bates provides excellent arguments for why progressives shouldn’t let themselves be coerced into voting for Kerry in 2004, including examples of the Democratic Party’s conservative record and its history of co-opting social movements.
Bates’ argument also gives ground to the idea that the Democratic Party can somehow be reformed--a position that undercuts otherwise great arguments for why we need to begin now to build an independent electoral alternative to the Democrats and Republicans.
