Carmichael's father encouraged his musical talents, paying for private lessons beginning at the age of four and letting him venture into a variety of instruments.
Carmichael was born again in 1944, and enrolled in Southern California Bible College.
Carmichael began writing for Kenton as his popularity had begun to fade, and became one of his right hand arrangers throughout his many experiments in the 1960s--including the big band take on the rock musical, "Hair," described by more than one Kenton fan as "his most embarassing record ever."

Ralph spent 5 years as the minister at a Los Angeles Baptist Church where he wrote the classic hymn," The Savior Is Waiting." Ralph had also begun writing the film scores for World Wide Pictures, the company that produced full-length feature movies for the Billy Graham organization.
Carmichael formed Light Records/Lexicon Music to be a vehicle for this new musical genre he had helped to create, which would come to be known as contemporary Christian music.

Carmichael's first instrument was the violin, which he picked up at age four; he later added piano, trumpet and vocal studies to his musical education, and while attending Southern California Bible College organized a series of vocal groups and orchestras.
