Ralph DePalma was an intense competitor but one of the most popular racers with his fellow drivers and the fans because of his good sportsmanship, a quality he displayed on and off the track.
Ralph DePalma had a small role in the 1920 Hollywood film, '' High Speed '' and in 1924 played the part of the Champion in an action/drama written by Wilfred Lucas titled '' Racing for Life ''.
DePalma was the brother of 500 competitor John DePalma and the uncle of 1925 Indy winner Pete DePaolo.

DePalma was forced into the pit for but one tire change, while Rickenbacher was in four times and Cooper a like number.
DePalma took the lead at the start and maintained it during the entire race with the exception of a brief period when Rickenbacher passed him and stayed in the lead for a couple of laps.
Ralph Mulford won the event last year with an average of 87 miles per hour for the 300 miles.

Ralph DePalma tried out his Mercedes car at the Speedway Thursday and in making his preliminary rounds set two new world's records for a one-mile circular board track.
DePalma went the twenty-five miles in fifteen minutes, 30 4-5 seconds or at the rate of 96.1 miles per hour.
Ralph DePalma, who finished second last year, is the favorite for the race today as a result of his performance in trial spin yesterday afternoon.

In 1912, Ralph DePalma was leading the Indianapolis 500 by an astonishing five miles when his car developed an oil leak and stopped with less than a mile to go.
DePalma and his mechanic, Rupert Jeffkins, got out and began pushing the car, but before they could reach the finish line, Joe Dawson completed two laps of the 2 1/2-mile track and passed them to win.
Though DePalma received a standing ovation, he was not entirely pleased.

DePalma has now led 200 laps in the two 500-Mile races at Indianapolis, with his closest competitor being retired Ray Harroun, who led 88 laps en route to victory in 1911.
