It is unfortunate that Ralph Gonsalves did not give examples of that great striving of the Caribbean masses, particularly when the most impressive instance of nearly the whole people self-organised, against the State administration took place in his own native St Vincent.
Ralph Everard Gonsalves (born 1945), popularly known as "Comrade Ralph," is the Prime Minister of St Vincent and the Grenadines.
Gonsalves is an intellectual who has spoken of a "Caribbean civilization" and advocates a closer union of the various small island nations and territories in the region.

Gonsalves declared that he would not attend any meeting with representatives of those who aided and abetted the forcible removal of a lawfully elected President of Haiti by outside forces with the help of thugs.

This Ralph Gonsalves view of the Caribbean as a distinctly new civilisation, is a large claim.
Not for Ralph Gonsalves the mere knowledge of the great scholar, detached in an ivory tower pontificating in popish infallibility; not just the criminal lawyer in Magistrate and High Court involved in the interstices of the underclass and the special knowledge that this brings.
Ralph says that "the Caribbean, metaphorically, has emerged, as roughly containing the songs of the Caribs [and Arawaks], the rhythm of Africa, the chords of Asia, the melody of Europe, and the lyrics of the Caribbean itself." It is a marvellous formulation.

According to the PNP chairman, Dr. Gonsalves was giving his personal views on the leadership qualities of the president of the People's National Party and was not "meddling".

The point that has to be underscored is that in a book of speeches and articles, a genre in which one of the finest minds of the 20th century, Isaiah Berlin, specialised, Ralph Gonsalves labours under a difficulty.
To be sure, Dr Ralph Gonsalves cannot claim that this new civilisation exists in the Caribbean.
Ralph Gonsalves is quite clear though, that there is in the Caribbean masses "their quest for greater democratic control over the state administration and for justice." That striving of the Caribbean masses to put the state under manners as we say in the vernacular, may be universal, but it is particularly pronounced in the Caribbean.

Gonsalves has been the chief lobbyist for the cash-strapped regional carrier over the last two years and is pushing hard to secure the formation of a single regional airline through the merger of Trinidad and Tobago’s BWIA and LIAT.

Gonsalves, in a sort of half-hearted attack on Trinidad and Tobago for its failure to expedite the planned merger of BWIA and LIAT, referred to a meeting in November 2002 and a follow up in June last year when decisions were made to facilitate the BWIA/LIAT merger.

Dr Ralph Gonsalves, Prime Minister of St Vincent and the Grenadines, is claiming that politicians of Indian descent would be the "principal beneficiaries" in a political union of Trinidad and Tobago, Grenada and his country.
Gonsalves admitted that he might be "hanged" for wanting such a union saying that people would say: "Boy, you see Patrick (Manning) want to bring a whole set of fl people to come and vote in Trinidad." The audience laughed.
Gonsalves said he does not have to go to his people about such a union since during his election campaign in 2001, he had said he would pursue any opportunity where a country wanted to forge a political union with St Vincent and the Grenadines.
