Marsden Hartley & American modernism by James Panero
Yet while Hartley’s formal paint handling owed debts to others in the avant-garde, his insatiate desire and spiritual yearning guided his development in sometimes wild and erratic ways that were his own.
One might read Hartley’s homosexuality and his antinomian spiritualism, cut with Calvinist sour grapes, as two of the forces that drove him on, yet his movement was both an exploration of emotion and the escape from it.
Hartley’s search for spiritual significance in the everyday was borne less of Emerson’s and Thoreau’s giddy pantheism than the white-washed iconoclasm of the protestant New England aesthetic.

Shannon–Hartley theorem - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
During the late 1920's, Harry Nyquist and Ralph Hartley developed a handful of fundamental ideas related to the transmission of information, particularly in the context of the telegraph as a communications system.
Hartley argued that the maximum number of distinct pulses that can be transmitted and received reliably over a communications channel is limited by the dynamic range of the signal amplitude and the precision with which the receiver can distinguish amplitude levels.
It connects Hartley's result with Shannon's channel capacity theorem in a form that is equivalent to specifying the M in Hartley's information rate formula in terms of a signal-to-noise ratio, but achieving reliability through error-correction coding rather than through reliably distinguishable pulse levels.

 Return to the Notwurst Passage
In short order I was assigned to Ralph Hartley's team for a return trip to the Notwurst passage we had begun surveying during the last Cassell weekend in November 2001.
Ralph found a shorter route through the Miseries this trip, so we made good time as we headed along the North fork to the Big Room and on to the 2nd Waterfall.
Since it was past 7:30 I suggested that we finish the survey of the room and leave the leads for the next trip (Ralph has a reputation for going until his team rebels so it seemed like a good time to instigate a rebellion).

This is an important use of the Hartley transform because the Fourier transform has immediate natural interpretation while, as far as I know, the Hartley transform does not.
In going from Hartley transforms of length 8 to Hartley transforms of length 4, we further refine the sort on X based on the next-least-significant bit of its indices.
If the Hartley transform is used only as a means to develop the Fourier transform, the cost of converting to the Fourier transform using Equation 2 should be taken into account in performance comparisons.
