Ralph Kirkpatrick's Well Tempered Clavier Book II
Kirkpatrick's Book II, also on clavichord, has now been released and is the subject of this review.
Prelude and Fugue in C sharp major - Kirkpatrick's Adagio in the Prelude is very fast and initially sounded rushed; however, he quickly had me totally convinced of his approach as I was drawn into the momentum and drive of the reading.
Don's Conclusions: Kirkpatrick's Book II is a fine achievement, and the use of the clavichord throughout is unusual and distinctive.

Archiv/DG recently re-issued Ralph Kirkpatrick's performances of Bach's Well Tempered Clavier Book 1 which were recorded in 1959 on the clavichord; the catalog number is 463601.
Prelude in E major - Kirkpatrick is exceptional with all the comfort I could ask for; when tension is needed, he rises to meet the need.
Kirkpatrick might not be as powerful as Suzuki in BIS, but the tension and foreboding permeates his performance.

A Way to Hear Bach Intimately, if Barely   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
The Troeger release and the Kirkpatrick reissue let us hear extraordinary Bach playing that would barely be audible from the stage of Carnegie Hall, and they show that the challenging little instrument seems to attract probing, responsive players.
Kirkpatrick understands the hierarchy of levels in these pieces, from ornaments to long-range harmonic tensions.
Kirkpatrick's virtuosity is usually infectious; but combined with his belief that Bach's time signatures imply nothing about tempo [click here for my argument to the contrary], it occasionally leads him to an overly hasty tempo.

Reviews for Goldberg Variations: Robin Sutherland, piano
The middle years of this century were marked by the domination of Rosalyn Tureck, a brilliant performer on both the harpsichord and piano, and a woman full of stimulating notions on the interpretation of Bach that have had a major influence on today's pianists and Baroque scholars alike.
Though Kirkpatrick performed Bach and others only on the harpsichord, he was anything but a pedant.
Kirkpatrick offered several points worthy of consideration in writings based on a series of lectures given at the University of California in 1964.

This is due to its steel-strung upper register, along with Kirkpatrick's lessened propensity for taking advantage of the instrument's "pitch-bend" capability (Robert Levin's clavichord selections in his Hänssler edition of the "48" often evoke the sound of a Hawaiian guitar!).
Kirkpatrick's playing is stylishly forthright yet always flexible, never machine-like, and not immune to modified Landowska-like curves and bends in the line, as the C minor and A minor preludes reveal.
I hope DG will make the remainder of Kirkpatrick's stereo Bach output more readily available, starting with a reissue of his harpsichord versions of the "48".

Goldberg Variations by Ralph Kirkpatrick at jsbach.org
Having been accustomed to Gould's interpretation of this masterpiece, my breath was literally taken away when I finally heard how the Variations "should" be played.
Kirkpatrick plays these no-holds-barred, making full use of the instrument and ultimately producing an almost orchestral effect.
I wouldn't presume to make an educated comparison with other harpsichord or piano recordings; all I can say is that everyone must have the chance to hear this one.
