 RALPH Description
RALPH decomposes the problem of steering a vehicle into three steps, 1) sampling of the image, 2) determining the road curvature, and 3) determining the lateral offset of the vehicle relative to the lane center.
RALPH can select the best template for the current conditions by testing several of these previously recorded templates to determine which has the highest correlation with the scanline intensity profile created for the current image.
As another example, when lane markers are worn or degraded, RALPH has demonstrated the ability to utilize the diffuse discoloration down the center of the lane, caused by oil spots from previous vehicles, to locate the road ahead and steer the vehicle.

Lane's narrative makes an interesting study in not only how documents from the past can provide factual information about past events, but also makes an interesting study in the language the leader of an expedition uses to describe the successes and, even more, the failures of his expedition.
A review of the publication history of Lane's narrative develops an interesting question for the study of many of the documents related to the 1580s Roanoke voyages—how did the context of the printing affect the way the works were read.
Lane's rhetorical style needs to be examined in light of not only the historical events that occurred under his leadership, but in comparison to similar works by other English and European leaders of expeditions, both those that were successful and those that did not live up to their sponsors' expectations.
