		So he commissioned McQuarrie to create several paintings which included R2-D2 and C-3PO in the desert, stormtroopers in the corridor of the Death Star and Luke and Darth Vader battling with lightsabers to show the studio executives.
		McQuarrie mixed elements of a Japanese warrior mask and armor with a spacesuit to come up with the terrifying costume befitting the Dark Lord of the Sith.
		McQuarrie lives in Berkeley, Calif. with his wife Joan.

		Ralph McQuarrie (born June 13, 1929 in Gary, Indiana) is a conceptual designer and futurist responsible for the look of Star Wars (all of the original trilogy), the original Battlestar Galactica (TV), E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial and Cocoon, for which he won an Academy Award.
		After arriving, however, he decided that the existing design team (lead by ILM illustrator Doug Chiang) was more than sufficient, and declined to participate -- much to the eventual disappointment of many "Original Trilogy" fans.
		McQuarrie played the uncredited role of General McQuarrie in Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back.

		The Illustrated Star Wars Universe I found this book a few years back, and was quite surprised, as I had seen hardly any of the paintings in it before.
